A

It was a cold night in Washington, D.C. and I was heading back to the hotel when a beggar walked up to me. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. After a short hesitation, I shook my head and kept walking. With helplessness, he said, “I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!” But still, I kept on walking.

The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. In fact, I had money in my pocket and it wouldn’t have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he had been lying. On a freezing cold night, I wondered what would happen to a hungry man.

Flying back to my hometown, Anchorage, I couldn’t help thinking of him. I tried to find excuses for my failure to help. After all, government agencies, churches and charities were there to feed him. Besides, you’re not supposed to give money to beggars.

But I just couldn’t forget the incident and began to think I must do something. At that time, I was writing a garden column(专栏) for the local Daily News. Suddenly, I came up with an idea. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens donated to Bean’s? Bean’s Cafe, the soup kitchen which has volunteered to feed hundreds of hungry people every day for many years.

The idea began to take off. I began to receive more e-mails and calls from kind people. They tried their best to show their concerns about the hungry. Food was sent by different warm-hearted people and even those who only grew flowers sent their flowers. They are food for the spirit, which comforted me a lot.

Next year, the Garden Writers Association of America held their annual conference in Anchorage and after learning of Anchorage’s program, Plant a Row for Bean’s became Plant a Row for the Hungry. You can imagine how happy I was then.

21. According to the passage, the reason why the author refused to give some money to the beggar probably is that ________.

A. he happened not to take money then B. he wasn’t fond of beggars

C. he thought that the beggar was lying D. he didn’t like being bothered

22. Why did the author can’t help thinking of the beggar ?

A. Because he felt he had done wrong for his failure to help him.

B. Because he wanted to know whether the beggar had lied to him.

C. Because he was worried that the beggar might die from hunger.

D. Because some agencies, churches and charities should help the beggar.

23. What does the underlined phrase “take off” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. remove clothes. B. leave suddenly. C. become successful. D. come into being.

24. What’s the correct order to record the author’s launch of the program “Plant a Row for the Hungry?”

① He ran into a beggar.

② He was regretful.

③ He came up with the idea of planting a row for Bean’s.

④ The Plant a Row for Bean's became Plant a Row for the Hungry.

⑤ He went back home.

⑥ Writers gathered in Anchorage.

A. ①②③④⑤⑥. B. ①⑤②③④⑥. C. ①②⑤③④⑥. D. ①②⑤③⑥④.

This is a finding of Norman R. Pace and his team at the University of Colorado, in the US. Pace’s team looked at 45 showerheads in nine American cities. They discovered that 30 percent of them had large amounts of flying Mycobacterium.

But Pace said that they pose few threats to the health.Only those with a weak immune system might need to worry. He told the New York Times that the bacteria are not as unpleasant as might be thought. He said that having a shower is no more dangerous than anything else we do in the morning.

But for those who feel sick about the idea of all those microorganisms(微生物), he had some advice. Let the water run for 30 seconds before getting into the shower. Why? The number of bacteria is smaller than that when the water is just turned on. If that seems like a waste of water, he added that you could also change your showerhead every few months. However, Pace had good news, too. He has also been testing the air in US subways. Apart from iron particles(粒子), which are ground off the track by the wheels of trains, subway air is fresh. The reason is that a train’s movement pumps fresh outdoor air into the tunnels. 25. From the finding of Norman R. Pace, after taking a shower, we might cough or feel tired

because _______.

A. it’s easy to get a cold when taking a bath.

B. the showerhead carries many bacteria causing illness

C. we don’t get cleaned while showering

D. we don’t get a weak immune system

26. We can learn from the third paragraph that ________.

A. having a shower in the morning is more dangerous than at other time

B. the bacteria always threat people’s health when people have a shower

C. people with strong immune system needn’t fear microorganisms

D. it is better to do some exercise in the morning than have a shower

27. The underlined word “pose” in the third paragraph probably means “________”.

A. give birth to B. take charge of C. watch out for D. get away with

28. What leads to fresh air in US subways??

A. The train’s movement. B. Iron particles.

C. Train wheels. C. Air conditioners on the trains.

“Have you ever found a treasure?” I once asked my father. He smiled a big smile and told me this story.

“Once when I was about ten years old,” my father told me, “I went treasure hunting with my older sister. She had heard some people talking about a treasure box hidden in a hillside cave. One day we went there and spent two or three hours looking for the entrance to the cave. Then, as I was trying to squeeze between two big stones, I suddenly fell into a hole.It was the mouth of a tunnel that led to the cave.My sister and I crawled through into it.It was very dark but we had brought a flashlight and we were shocked to see that there was a large wooden box ahead of us.We ran to the box and pulled it open.It was filled with silver and gold coins.I started to count them but my sister told me to stop.“This is only money ,”she said,“This is not a real treasure. If you want money , all you have to do is to work for it”.

I was going to argue with her when I suddenly noticed a big metal box on the other side of the cave. The box was filled with statues. Some statues were made of ivory or gold, with diamonds for eyes and rubies for lips.I took one of the gold statues out of the box.‘Don’t do that!’ yelled my sister.‘This is only beauty and art.It is not a real treasure. There must be something better here.’

We searched and searched, but there was nothing else in the cave. Then the battery in the flashlight started to die.We got scared and crawled back.I wiggled through but my sister got stuck half way between the stones.I tried to pull her out but I couldn’t.I ran up and down the street knocking on doors but nobody would come.

The only one who would help was a girl about my age.She got a rope and a spade and a water bottle.About an hour later, we got my sister out of the stones.I became good friends with the girl who had helped us.She was very responsible, faithful, kind and loving. When we finished college I realized that she was the woman I wanted to marry. That’s
