Dear Mr. Wood,

How I miss you and your family! I am doing well these days with my studies, but only one thing troubles me a lot. So I’m writing to ask for your help.

As you know, I am finishing my Senior High studies this summer. For further studying plan, I have disagreements with my parents. I wish to go abroad for my degrees, for the new environment will not only help broaden my horizon, but also give me chances to learn to be independent. However, my parents insist I should go to home universities. They say it’s safer to study in my homeland and at the same time we can save money. Also sounds reasonable? What choice should I make? I am eager to know your idea.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

Dear Mr. Wood,

How I miss you and your family! I am doing well these days with my studies, but only one thing troubles me a lot. So I’m writing to ask for your help.

As you know, I am finishing my Senior High studies this summer. For further studying plan, I have disagreements with my parents. I wish to go to Beijing University majoring in Chinese, for it has been my dream since childhood. However, my parents are persuading me to study abroad for my degrees. They say the new environment will not only help broaden my horizon, but also give me chances to learn to be independent. Also sounds reasonable? What choice should I make? I am eager to know your idea.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

附:听力部分录音原文

Text 1

M: Can you lend me that novel when you have finished with it?

W: Oh, it’s not mine. I’ll have to see what Alice says.

Text 2

W: Did you get my message about the meeting on Monday?

M: Yes, I did. But I’m still not quite sure what the meeting is about. Not bad news, I hope.

Text 3

W: Look at the long waiting line. I’m glad you’ve made a reservation.

M: More and more people enjoy eating out now.

Text 4

W: Could you drive me to the station quickly? I’m going to meet a friend at 10 o’clock, but it’s 9:50 now.

M: I’ll try. But with such heavy traffic it will take at least 15 minutes.

Text 5

M: The new computer software is driving me crazy!

W: I know what you mean. I’ve had nothing but trouble with it.

M: Well, I think only a genius can figure it out. Can you pass me the water, please?

W: Sure, why don’t you sit down for a minute? You haven’t taken a rest all morning.

Text 6

W: Hi, Tony, how was your business trip? I was told you arrived this morning. Why? I thought you were due back a couple of days ago.

M: Mmm, that had been the plan.

W: Well, what happened?

M: You’ve heard about the air strike?

W: Oh, yes, of course. But I had forgotten you were travelling by plane. How did you manage?

M: Well, by train.

W: I see.

M: You know, it took a lot longer, but the scenery along the way was nice. Actually, we’ve decided to go for it again next time!

Text 7

W: Did you remember to get the tickets for the play?

M: Well, I remembered, but they were sold out. What do we do now? Shall we go out for a meal?

W: No. We did that last weekend.

M: What about a concert?

W: It’s a waste of money going to a concert. I mean you can buy CDs and listen at home or on the radio.

M: I don’t agree. I love seeing a live performance. There’s always such a fantastic feeling in the audience, such an atmosphere. How about going down to the sports centre?

W: I don’t feel the least bit energetic. I’ve had a very hard day and the last thing I want is to run around.

Text 8

W: Hi, Ben. What are you doing?

M: Selling dictionaries. Do you want to buy one?

W: What? Why are you doing that?

M: Well, you know, the dictionary is really helpful for us foreign students. Then I saw an ad in the paper to sell dictionaries. I applied and got the job.

W: Are you making any money?

M: Not a lot. I make enough to pay my tuition for English class. Well, I can’t talk long because I have an appointment this afternoon. At 2 o’clock I have to be at the Dock and Stock Company. I’m really nervous. It’s my first appointment in an office.

W: I’m sure you’ll be fine. Why don’t we meet for a cup of coffee when you’ve done.

M: OK. We could meet at the coffee shop on Hemlock Street at 5 o’clock.

Text 9

M: I haven’t seen you around recently. Where have you been?

W: I’ve been at two meetings in a row, one in New York and one in Miami.

M: Then you haven’t heard the news. Tom finally got promoted. He’s going to be the new office manager.

W: That’s wonderful! But what about Sylvia?

M: She’s going to be the head of the new office in San Francisco!

W: Oh, that’s good news too! Who’s going to get assigned to run the Sales Department in San Francisco?

M: I heard that Max is being considered for the Job.

W: He’s lucky. San Francisco is a wonderful town. I wouldn’t mind living there myself.

M: Does that mean you’re going to apply for a transfer?

W: Oh, no. I like it here.

M: Anyway, sooner or later you’ll probably get sent to San Francisco on one of your trips.

W: Yes, I’m sure I will. That’s one good thing about my job --- I certainly get to travel a lot.

Text 10

W: The reasons people abuse drugs are as different as people are from one to another. But there seems to be one common thread: people want to change the way they feel. They want to feel better or happy. People feel better about themselves when they are under the influence of drugs. But the effects don’t last long. Drugs don’t solve problems. They just postpone them. If someone you know is using or abusing drugs, you can help. The most important part you can play is to be there. You can let your friends know that you care. You can listen and try to solve the problem from your friend’s need to use drugs. Studies of heavy abusers in the United States show that they felt unloved and unwanted. When you and your friends can take the time to care for each other, you’re all helping to stop drug abuse.
