This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me. I read your blog every morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn't until this March that I told myself "no more negativity" as you taught readers in your blog. Since then I've got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in the front door, I'm the first face they see, so I smile big when I say "good morning" to them, especially on Mondays. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive assistant position that I wanted. One of the biggest things I've taken to heart from your blog is changing my perspective on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate (热情的) about it, I could make my life fulfilling. All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it truly is inspiring to me. So thank you so much, John. My life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction, Take care! Sincerely , Amber 21. He likes helping others through writing positive blogs. 24. What does Amber's change tell us? A. Practice makes perfect. B. Bad luck doesn't exist long. C. A positive attitude is rewarding. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B The air quality has worsened in the Chinese capital since Wednesday, causing renewed discontent among residents. Without rainfall and wind to decrease pollutants, particulate matter(颗粒物质) has been accumulating in the air. Most monitoring stations measured PM 10 ( particulate matter smaller than 10 micrograms) at higher than 300 micrograms per cubic meter. In southwestern Beijing's Fangshan District, the Liangxiang station recorded 516 micrograms of PM 10 per cubic meter, the highest reading of the day, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center. More than 150 micrograms is considered harmful to health. Beijing has been covered by heavy smog off and on this winter, and the ongoing air concerns are wearing on residents, particularly as they prepare to celebrate the Spring Festival holiday next week. "I almost got choked by the smog when I stepped out of the office building on Wednesday," said Yang Yanli, 24, an accountant. "The smell is so terrible, as though I’m inhaling lots of coal, that it has spoiled my holiday mood. " Unlike the smog that hit mostly the southern part of the capital on January 1, the smog in recent days has covered the entire city, according to the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau. Worse yet, it will continue until Saturday, when the wind will pick up and blow it away, the bureau predicted. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests people stay at home to protect themselves from breathing and heart problems caused by heavy smog and people with breathing problems put off traveling if the smog stays. But many people said they had to brave the bad air to travel, especially migrants who are eager to reunite with their families during the Spring Festival. 25. According to the passage, most monitoring stations in Beijing measured PM 10 at this week. A. higher than 300 micrograms per cubic meter B. smaller than 10 micrograms per cubic meter C. 516 micrograms of PM 10 per cubic meter D. more than 150 micrograms per cubic meter 26. According to the passage, the highest reading about pollution is taken in _______. A. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention B. Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center C. Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau D. Southwestern Beijing's Fangshan District 27. The underlined word " inhaling” in the third paragraph probably means . A. coughing B. breathing in C. choking D. sneezing 28. The smog weather is supposed to last until ______ . A. spring B. the Spring Festival C. Saturday D. Wednesday C What is politeness? This sounds like a simple question. In daily life, we often make judgments about what is polite and what is not polite. For example, to offer your seat to the elderly on a bus is considered polite behavior, and to interrupt when someone is talking is considered impolite; to greet someone the first time you meet him in the morning is polite and to stand up to reach for the dish you want at a dinner table is impolite. So politeness can first of all be regarded as a phenomenon, an observable social phenomenon. What I would like to propose is that as an observable social phenomenon, politeness is something superficial, but to account for what is understood at the surface, we should dig into the depth where different cultural values are rooted. When being complimented (赞美), an English-speaking person would readily accept the compliment by saying something like "Thank you" to show his appreciation of the praise, but a Chinese speaker would try to deny the truth of the compliment. They both think they are behaving properly. Yet neither of them would think the other is being polite. The English speaker is being polite to the extent that by accepting and showing appreciation of the compliment, and he avoids hurting the positive face of the person who makes it; the Chinese speaker is showing modesty by Denigrating(贬低) himself, ignoring the fact of the compliment paid to him. As has been mentioned, self-denigration has been at the core of the Chinese understanding of politeness for over two thousand years. The Chinese, in order to show modesty, will go to such lengths as to underrate what he himself has achieved and deny the truth of a complimentary remark. 29. According to the first paragraph, politeness can be briefly described as _____ A. proper social phenomena B. being modest C. showing appreciation | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
