One day, as I was passing the elephants, I suddenly stopped, 16 by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. It was __17__that they could, at any time, break free, 18 strangely enough, they didn’t. I asked a trainer the 19 for this. He said, “When they were very young we used the 20 size rope, and it was enough to hold them. As they grow up, they believe the rope can 21 hold them, so they never try.” Like the elephants, how many of you believe you cannot do a thing, simply because you 22 once before? Do you often tell 23 “I cannot dance” or “I’m not good at math”? These are 24 of self limiting beliefs. You must realize you’re 25 for them. The answer is that your way of life, wherever you live in the world, is tied to the tropics in many ways. If you live in a house, wash your hair, eat fruits and vegetables, drink soda, or drive a car, you can be certain that you are affected by the loss of tropical forests. Biologically, we are losing the richest regions on earth when, each minute, a piece of tropical forest, the size of ten city blocks, disappears. As many as five million species of plants, animals, and insects (40 to 50 percent of all living things) live there, and are being lost faster than they can be found and described. Their loss is immeasurable. Take rubber for example. For many uses, only natural rubber from trees will do. Synthetics are not good enough. Today over half the world's commercial rubber is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, while the Amazon's rubber industry produces much of the world's four million tons. And rubber is an important material in making gloves, balloons, footwear and many sporting goods. Thousands of other tropical plants are valuable for their industrial use. Many scientists strongly believe that deforestation contributes to the greenhouse effect -- or heating of the earth from increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As we destroy forests, we lose their ability to change carbon dioxide into oxygen. Carbon dioxide levels could double within the next half-century, warming the earth by as much as 4.5 degrees. The result? A partial melt-down of polar ice caps, raising sea levels as much as 24 feet; even 15 feet could threaten anyone living within 35 miles of the coast. Unbelievable? Maybe. But scientists warn that by the time we realise the severe effects of tropical deforestation, it will be 20 years too late. Can tropical deforestation affect our everyday lives? Now, you should have got the answer. 36.The underlined word "synthetics" probably means_________. A. natural rubber B. tropical materials C. man-made material D. commercial rubber 37.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A. The forests are losing their function in turning carbon dioxide into oxygen. B. Many of our daily uses are related to the tropical forests. C. Tropical plants can be used to make industrial products. D. High carbon dioxide levels will make the earth warmer. 38.The author's attitude towards the tropical deforestation is _________ . A. puzzling B. cold C. supporting D. opposed 39.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. Tropical Forests B. The Value of Tropical Forests C. Tropical Forests and Our Life D. The Greenhouse Effects B Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket--- anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England. [来源:Z_xx_k.Com] It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon. The following year he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided that this would be his future. In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition(探险) towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite(冻疮), ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled(雪橇) up and over rocky ice. Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old pla | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
