If you can change yourself from a pessimist to an optimist, you are sure to change your fate. Until the beginning of Senior Grade Two, I did poorly in English, but I just didn’t give up because I was always encouraged by both the people around me and myself. I kept practicing speaking, listening, reading and writing. When I was fed up with listening, I usually entertained myself by reading some interesting English stories and jokes or seeing English films. When I had trouble getting words flowing on paper, I turned to word games or English songs. Whatever setback I encountered, I welcomed it and was always able to make myself cheerful and optimistic, dreaming about a splendid future and believing that hard work would eventually pay off. Gradually, I made progress beyond belief in my English. Thanks to optimism, I have become one of the top English learners in my class now. 听力材料: Text 1 W: I heard you wanted to study biology or chemistry in university. M: Yes, but I’ve changed my mind. I’m studying medicine. Text 2 W: Jack, do you often go to the music store? M: Yeah. I like to listen to new songs there. I don’t have money to buy them, but I don’t have to pay for listening. Text 3 M: Hello, I’m Martin Smith. I called four days ago to book rooms. W: Let me see…Yes. Rooms 613 and 614. Here are your keys. Text 4 M: Mary, I’m afraid you can’t take your vacation next week. W: Oh, why? M: We have to finish this project at the end of this month. W: Hm…in that case I will take it next month. M: That’s OK. But you’ll have to attend a meeting abroad after you come back. Text 5 M: Oh, I can’t find my credit card. W: When did you use it last time? M: I paid for some books and chocolates this morning with it, but I remember putting it back. W: Then, how did you pay for lunch? M: I paid cash. Oh, how could I pay for these flowers now? Text 6 M: Mary, do you like summer? W: No. I don’t like being hot and sweaty. M: Well, it’s pretty hot in Japan, so you must dislike summer here. W: No, I don’t. M: Is it hot in summer in your homeland? W: Yeah, it’s pretty hot in Canada, but usually we go to Iceland to spend summer holidays. M: So, what’s your favorite season? W: Both spring and autumn are nice. But I enjoy the cold weather, so winter is my favorite. Text 7 M: You’re so slim, Jane. How do you manage to keep fit ? W: Well, I exercise a lot. I go running three times a week. Also, I play tennis every weekend. M: Well, actually, I also exercise a lot. I do exercise four times a week. W: Do you? M: Yeah, so maybe it’s my diet that makes me overweight. You see, I eat a lot of junk food. W: In that case, you should cook some healthy foods. M: That’s pretty hard! I’m too busy to prepare foods. W: I can teach you how to prepare some simple and healthy dishes quickly. M: All right! Thanks a lot. Text 8 W: Ben, do you have a pet? M: Yes, we have four dogs and two cats and my family specially raises dogs to help blind people. W: Oh, that’s cool! How do you train the dogs? M: It’s a long process. We get them when they’re young. First, we train them to do really basic things, such as sitting and coming. Then, we send them to training schools when they’re about two years old. W: Wow! Then, how many dogs do you train at a time? M: Oh, just one dog at a time. W: Um, I don’t think your dogs are simple pets. They will also work. I wonder why so many people keep pets. M: To keep them from feeling lonely? W: That must be one reason. Besides cats and dogs, what other pets do you like? M: Well, fish. And what’s your favorite? W: I like snakes. I want to raise one. But I am worried about the costs. M: Food is probably the biggest cost. Text 9 W: So, what do you like to do when you are free? M: I like watching TV and listening to music. W: Anything else? M: Well , I also like to do exercise. I go to a health club in my community regularly. W: That’s good. I like to stay in shape, so I play a lot of sports. On a nice day, I like to run around the lake or cycle in the park. M: Some friends always ask me to cycle with them, but I’ve never got into it. Sometimes I would play basketball with them. What do you usually do with your friends? W: We go out for shopping a lot. M: I know some girls like bags, and some like shoes or clothes. What do you like the most? W: Well, I can never have too many pairs of shoes. I have about 30 pairs already, but I am always shopping for more. M: Oh. The foods are ready. W: Great. I’m so hungry. M: After dinner, do you want to watch a movie? W: Sure. I have been looking forward to watching a good movie. Text 10 Nelson decided to take his kids to the park last Saturday. After they got there, everything was fine until they were driving through the area where the elephants were, and they stopped for a moment to take some photos. His little boy opened the window to give an elephant a sandwich. This huge elephant came to them and suddenly put his nose through the window. And when Nelson tried to close the window, it got worse because the elephant’s nose got trapped. The elephant was so frightened that it started hitting the car. Luckily one guard saw what was going on and rescued them. They were pretty shocked, and two of the windows of their car were broken. The guards gave the kids some juice and their mum and dad a glass of beer to calm them down. Then they set off home, but when they were about halfway back, they saw an accident had happened on the freeway. There were two police cars, and of course Nelson stopped, as he’s a doctor, to see if he could help. But when the policemen saw Nelson’s car, they were a bit surprised and asked him what happened to it, so he told them all about the elephant. They were just confused about the elephant and thought he must have been drunk. So they asked him to take a breath test. And of course because of that huge glass of beer at the park, now he’s going to face a punishment. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
