M:I¡¯m really surprised you got an A on the test; you didn¡¯t seem to have done a lot of reading.

W:Now you know why I never missed the lecture.

M:Jane missed class again, didn¡¯t she? I wonder why.

W:Well, I knew she had been absent all week, so I called her this morning to see if she was sick. It turned out that her husband was badly injured in a car accident.

W:Good afternoon, Sir. Can I help you?

M:Yeah, I want a shared room for one night. How much is that?

W:It is 25 pounds. Can I have your passport?

M:Here you are.

M:Have you checked the sales figures yet?

W:Yes, I checked them yesterday.

M:Good. And have you written the sales report yet?

W:I haven¡¯t finished it yet. I¡¯m writing it now.

M:Do you know how to play tennis?

W:Not very well. But I¡¯d love to learn.

M:Would you like to play with me tomorrow morning?

W:Certainly, but I¡¯m not very good.

M:We¡¯ll see about that. Anyway, you know that practice makes perfect.

W:How is eight o¡¯clock?

M:OK, you won¡¯t forget to bring extra tennis balls, will you?

W:Of course not.

M:So long!

W:Bye!

W:Where are you off to in a hurry, Bill?

M:I have been invited to a jazz party which starts at 6:30. I am almost late.

W:But it is only six o¡¯clock now by my watch.

M:You don¡¯t know that my friend¡¯s house is quite a distance from here. It takes a long time to get there.

W:I guess you¡¯d better take a taxi.

M:Yes, I have the same idea.

W:Why haven¡¯t you left the office yet?

M:I haven¡¯t finished my report.

W:It¡¯s already dark now.

M:I will go right after I finish this report.

W:But you may miss the beginning of the film.

M:Film? What film?

W:Did I not tell you? Oh, my God. I can¡¯t believe I forgot it. Mary bought two tickets for tonight¡¯s film. And she will be waiting for you at half past eight outside the cinema.

M:But I¡¯m not sure whether I will be able to be there on time.

W:Why not leave your report until tomorrow? If you¡¯re late, she won¡¯t be happy.

M:I¡¯ll have a lot of other work tomorrow. But I guess I can stay up late for the report.

W:All right. Just go. I¡¯ll turn off the lights for you.

M:Ah, it¡¯s such a lovely day. It reminds me of last week. I love that city, you know.

W:I do too. Really, it¡¯s got something about it, a certain sort of charm.

M:Um...and all that wine and good food.

W:And so cheap, right?

M:Yes, although the shops are expensive. I mean really I bought nothing at all. I just ate and ate and drank and drank.

W:I know. Wasn¡¯t it that lovely?

M:Yes. And I like the tower too. There is a lovely view from the top.

W:Oh, you went right up, but I didn¡¯t.

M:Of course, you didn¡¯t. You went down by the river, didn¡¯t you?

W:That¡¯s it. Oh, walking around the river with other couples and it is so romantic, and the paintings too.

M:They do have excellent artists. How lovely! I think we go back again next year, shouldn¡¯t we?

W:It really is exciting, yes. If only to have some more of the wine.

M:I recently bought an old house, and now I¡¯m trying to fix it up. I¡¯d like to make a few home improvements before I move in. First of all, I¡¯m pulling out all of the old carpet and laying down new carpet throughout the house. I¡¯m also putting in new lights. The old ones don¡¯t light up the rooms very well. Next, I¡¯m changing the entire kitchen by putting in new kitchen cabinets, a new counter top, a new sink and faucet. I¡¯m also going to buy new equipment for the kitchen. I¡¯m also thinking about adding a new addition to the house, which would include a new family room and a dining area. Outside our back door, I¡¯m going to build a deck where we can sit, relax, and have barbecues. We will also do some landscaping to the yard to beautify things a little. One final thing I need to do is to replace the roof. The old roof is falling off in places, and if I don¡¯t replace it, it might start having leaks in the house. By the time I¡¯m finished with these home improvement projects, the place should look as good as new.
