When a man got to India for the first time, he saw a lot of fruits. In India they have plenty of fruits to sell, but many of them are expensive because they can’t grow many due to the water situation.[来源:学+科+网] When he saw a big basket of red, long fruit, he went up and asked, “How much per kilo?” The shopkeeper said, “Two rupees.” Two rupees in India is nothing; it’s like dirt. So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating them. But after he ate some of them, his eyes watered, his mouth burned and his face became red. But he still continued to eat the fruit! Some people who were looking at him shook their heads and said, “You’re crazy, man. Those are peppers! You can’t eat so many! People use them as a condiment(佐料), but only a little bit to put into food for taste.” But the stupid man said, “No, I can’t stop! I paid money for them, and now I’ll eat them.” Similarly, we sometimes do a lot of things like that. We spend money, time or effort on a relationship, business or job. And even though bitter experience tells us it won’t work, and we know there’s no more hope that things will change in the future, we still continue just because we’ve spent money, time, effort and love on it. If so, we’re just like the man who ate the peppers and suffered so much but couldn’t stop because he didn’t want to waste the money he’d paid. So even if you’ve lost something, let it go and move on. That’s better than continuing to lose. 36. Why did the man buy a kilogram of peppers? A. Because the appearance attracted him. B. Because he had never seen peppers before. C. Because the peppers were very cheap. D. Because he thought peppers were delicious. 37. We can learn from the passage that ________. A. many kinds of fruits are planted in India B. it rains a lot all around the year in India C. India is a country which depends on fruits D. many fruits are imported to India every year 38. The man wouldn’t give up the peppers for the reason that ________. A. he thought it would be a waste of money B. he was used to the taste of peppers C. he was afraid of being laughed at by others D. he could keep them for other purposes 39. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Experience is gained through doing. B. Success belongs to those who keep on. C. It’s wise to give up in some cases. D. Following others’ advice is important. B Canadian violinist Adrian Anantawan was born without a right hand in 1986. His parents raised their son as if he held all the tools of a typical child, which prepared the violinist to follow his dreams. His career started when his father, an amateur violinist, handed him a violin. He began taking lessons when he was nine and ever since has established himself as “a rising star in classical music”. Adrian has never let the excuse stand in the way of his art. With the help of biomedical engineers in Toronto, he was able to play with a special device(装置) which has allowed him to play the instrument skillfully, with careful guidance from creative arts educators within schools and the community. While all children may not have the same luck and opportunities as he did, he believes it is possible to have a career in music for those with disabilities, given the right environment and assistance. He played his first solo(独奏)in a youth band at age 13 and at 16 was accepted into the famous Curtis Institute of Music. In 2006, after enjoying a full scholarship, Adrian graduated from Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 2008, he completed his Master’s degree in music at Yale University. At 26, Adrian is one of the world’s most promising violinists. His schedule is filled with engagements at the White House and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Wendy Watson, director of the 2008 documentary(纪录片) Adrian Anantawan, says she knew by the time he was 15 that he would accomplish great things. “He had this determination to show the world that this can be done,” says Watson, “He’s never felt disadvantaged. When he was born, the arm was taken away but this gift was given to him.” 40. How did Adrian’s p | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
