There was great excitement at Thorby police station. The Inspector had received a phone call froman informer(通报者). The man said that a gang (帮，伙) intended to rob the main post office. He even told the Inspector the date and time for which the robbery was planned. The Thorhy police were not used to serious crimes (罪). Except for occasional cases of ap- ple stealing, their peace was seldom disturbed. Hardly did anything more serious happen.

The robbery was going to take place at two o'clock on market day. The informer said that one of the gang would have a revolver. This worded the Inspector most of all. On market days, the street near the post office was always crowded. There was danger that someone might be killed. It was the most difficult case the Inspector had ever had.
