Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be time for a few lessons in self-confidence. You can build your confidence by following some suggestions from doctors and psychologists.

Make a decision not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. And don’t turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.

Prepare for yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you have. Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people . I think about what you would like to say in advance. Then say it.

If you start feeling self-conscious in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people, Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned about the impression they are making, too.

No one ever gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their shyness. Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy. They work at fighting their shy feelings so that they can face the cameras and the public. Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards. But perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know about you.

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children’s safety on the roads.

Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.

The new plan is to be fired out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government said in the past that they would not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster. Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.

5. What is the aim of the plan?

A. To prevent the students’ road accidents B. To relieve the traffic pressure

C. To save time for the parents and students D. To help the parents save money

6. How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost?

A. By letting the bus run in the morning only

B. By limiting the number of the students

C. By getting the support from the headmaster

D. By linking the new bus service with the existing one

7. Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out?

A. The bus company will make much more money

B. The children can choose whatever school they like

C. The parents can get rid of their worries

D. The students in Impington School can have free bus rides

8. This passage is most probably _____

A. a personal letter B. an advertisement

C. a headmaster’s report D. a newspaper article

C

On June 5, 1981 the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, U.S. announced the presence of a rare, infectious disease in five American homosexuals (同性恋). Soon doctors were finding similar cases all over the country and the world. The AIDS epidemic(流行病)had officially begun. By 1983 it was clear that AIDS had spread around the world. More than twenty years later, AIDS has left twenty-six million dead and another forty million infected. AIDS has become the worst medical disaster ever experienced by mankind.

Hundreds of young people between the ages of 20 and 45 died each week during the early years of the U.S. AIDS. More than 600,000 cases of AIDS have been reported since 1981 in the United States, and it is estimated that there may be as many as 900,000 Americans infected with HIV.

Though the rate of HIV infections continues to increase in the United States, the number of AIDS cases has fallen sharply since 1996, when antiretroviral drugs came onto the market. Unfortunately, the AIDS epidemic continues today in Africa and much of Asia, where antiretroviral treatment is not available and health care is far from enough. AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide, and the No. 1 cause of death due to infectious disease.

HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was first separated in 1983 by a team at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. That discovery made it possible to develop a test for AIDS and trace back to victims who may have died before doctors were aware of the disease.

However, scientists still don't know exactly how and where AIDS started. Finding the source of AIDS could be important in developing a vaccine(疫苗) and be important in mapping the future course of the epidemic.

9. It can be inferred from the passage that

A. antiretroviral drugs will be obtained easily all over the world

B. the best way to stop AIDS is to develop a vaccine

B. scientists will soon find a way to cure AIDS

D. there will be fewer AIDS cases in the world in the future

10. Which areas are the most worrying places where AIDS spreads quickly?

A. Africa. B. Asia. C. The United States. D. France.

11. The number of AIDS cases has greatly decreased in the United States due to the fact

A. a team at the Pasteur Institute in Paris succeeded in separating HIV

B. some effective medicine has been invented

B. scientists understand AIDS better and better.

D. The rate of HIV infections continue to rise in the United States

12. When did the name of AIDS come into being?

A. In 1983. B. In 1981. C. In 1996. D. In 1994.

Balzac was good at buying things at its lowest price. One day he wanted to buy a vase in a shop window that was much more expensive than he could offer. Not being able to make the shopkeeper cut down its price very much, he left without further talking. Collecting a half dozen of his friends, he explained his wish to them and they worked a plan. The first would enter the shop and make an offer, lower than the marked price. Not getting the vase at his price, he would walk out. Shortly after another would enter and ask for a price lower than the first. In this way, each of the others would offer a price lower than the one before, and the last of his friends made a great effort to attempt to get it at the lowest price. Before long Balzac himself would return, offer more than the last two or three persons made and trust to luck. The plan worked--- Balzac got the vase at his price!

13. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A vase in the window was placed much higher than Balzac could reach.

At first the price of the vase was much higher than Balzac could offer.

Balzac always wanted to buy a vase that was much more expensive than he could pay

Balzac was very poor. He couldn’t buy the vase at a high price.

How many friends did Balzac gather?

A. Six B. Twelve C. Ten D. Five

What kind of person does the writer try to tell us about Balzac and his friends?

A. Unkind B. Dishonest C. Selfish D. Clever
