Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years old, nor may your friends buy it for you.

Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossing and do not take any chances when crossing the road.

My next point is about litter. It is an offence to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.

Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years old.

I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should contact your local police station, who will be pleased to help you.

When 24-year-old Hannah Brencher moved to New York after college, she was hit by depression and loneliness. One day she felt so lonely that she wanted to reach out to someone. So she put pen to paper and started writing letters—letters to complete strangers.

But these weren’t sad letters about how she was feeling. They were happy letters, all about other people, not her. She would write messages for people to have a “bright day” and tell strangers how outstanding they were, even if they thought no one else had noticed. Brencher began dropping the notes all over New York, in cafes, in library books, in parks and on the subway. It made her feel better, knowing that she might be making somebody’s day through just a few short, sweet words. It gave her something to focus on. And so, the website The World Needs More Love Letters was born.

The World Needs More Love Letters is all about writing letters—not emails, but proper, handwritten letters. Not traditional love letters, written to a real beloved, but surprise letters for strangers. They don’t necessarily say “I love you”, but they are full of kindness—telling people they are remarkable and special and all-around amazing.

Brencher’s initiative has now exploded. She has personally written hundreds of letters. Last year, she did a TED talk, in which she talked about a woman whose husband, a soldier, came back after Afghanistan and they struggled to reconnect: “So she leaves love letters all over the house as a way to say ‘Come back to me. Find me when you can.’ ”and then came another story of a man threatening to kill himself on his Facebook page, only to now be in the land of the living, with many love letters under his pillow.

The World Needs More Love Letters works on the idea that “A love letter a day keeps the doctor away”. It’s about sharing positive energy, restoring confidence and happiness. There are now more than 10, 000 people from all over the world joining in to write letters to the lonely and depressed, to basically tell them that everything will be okay.

24. When feeling lonely, Brencher wrote letters to _____.

A. share her sad feeling with strangers B. brighten strangers’ day with kind words

C. express her wish to have a bright day D. tell strangers how outstanding she was

25. What can we know from Paragraph 3?

A. We are in a world that needs more love. B. What the website is about and how it works.

C. How the letters work for the needed. D. Everyone needs a surprise letter.

26. What can be inferred from Brencher’s TED talk?

A. The man asked his wife to look for him

B. The man’s wife joined The World Needs More Love Letters.

C. The life of the man in the second story has been saved by the love letters.

D. The man in the second story has written many love letters.

27. In the last paragraph, the underlined sentence means _____.

A. love letters can keep you seeing a doctor B. love letters can make a doctor out of work

C. love letters can help you become a doctor D. love letters can help you cheer up in spirits

LONDON—Dozens of British music stars have come together to record a new version of the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” to raise money for the fight against Ebola(埃博拉病毒).

Thirty years ago, British musician Bob Geldof brought together dozens of stars under the name Band Aid 30. Their song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” raised $ 11 million for victims of the Ethiopian famine(饥荒).

Now he’s done it again. A new generation of musicians plus a few old faces have recorded a reworked version of the same song to raise money for the fight against Ebola. Geldof says the international community has not given enough to fight Ebola. “They need 20 times that,” he said.

The song has topped the charts in Britain. But the Band Aid 30 release has not been universally welcomed in Africa.

Several African stars including Salif Keita and Mory Kante have come together under the group name “3D Family” to record an alternative fundraising song titled “Africa stop Ebola ”. All proceeds(筹款) go to the charity Doctors Without Borders.

Sung in French and local languages, it urges people to go to a doctor if they are ill—and warns them to avoid touching dead bodies.

Among the artists on the track is Senegalese Didier Awadi—who also criticized the Band Aid 30. “we have a problem in Africa, so I come to help the Africans”, said Awadi.

Medical experts say the disease has spread so quickly in West Africa because people lack information about how to fight the disease. “Music might change that.” Says Guinean singer Mory Kante, who also appears on “Africa stop Ebola”.

“I think that art and culture is the shortest route to communicate with these villagers so that they understand the importance of being able to avoid it.” Said Kante.

28. Who set up the Band Aid 30?

A. Didier Awadi. B. Mory Kante. C. Salif Keita. D. Bob Geldof

29. Geldof recorded a re-worked version of the same song because _____.

A. he wants to collect enough money to f
