Section A Short Conversations

W: This black shirt is $2, and the blue one is $3.

M: I prefer the red one, although it is twice the price of the blue one.

Q: How much does the red shirt cost?

W: Good evening, Mr. Johnson. I am with the local newspaper. May I ask you a few

questions?

M: Sure. Go ahead, please.

Q: What is the woman’s job?

W: Could you help me set the table?.

M: Just a minute. I’m almost through this chapter.

Q: What is the man probably doing now?

W: We can’t find David. He is missing! The train is about to start.

M: Don’t worry. Maybe he is buying some food at the shop on the platform.

Q: Where are the two speakers?

W: So, may I ask you how you found out about our hotel?

M: Oh, I found the information on your website.

Q: Where did the man find the information about the hotel?

W: Hi, Jim! Your poor leg! What happened?

M: I broke it last week when I was skiing.

Q: What happened to the boy?

W: Why are you looking at the calendar? Are we going somewhere?

M: I am. I have to take a business trip to Mexico.

Q: What is the man probably going to do?

W: I want to exercise, but never seem to find time.

M: Why not do it the first thing in the morning?

Q: What is the woman’s problem?

W: I like that mobile phone very much, but I can’t afford it right now.

M: Why did you spend all your money on your dresses?

Q: Why can’t the woman buy the mobile phone?

W: Could you handle this suitcase for me?

M: How many hands do you think I have?

Q: What does the man mean?

Section B Passages

Hello! Welcome to our magical train. Although you are lucky enough to have been selected to take this magical train and travel back in time, you are probably asking yourself, “Now that I have the opportunity to travel back to the 18th century, what am I going to do for fun?” Don’t worry, my friend. That’s what I am going to do for you. Did I not introduce myself? Sorry, how careless of me! My name is David Garrick, 18th century love god and hero of Shakespeare’s play, and I am also Harry Potter’s friend. I am an excellent host. Lucky you have been kind enough to plan a little trip with us. I have arranged a series of fun and inexpensive activities that will show you how to live like an 18th century person. What? You think you should be treated like kings or queens? Well, the common people have more fun anyway. Below is the travel schedule that lists the activities that I have planned for you. After you have read our schedule, press the button on your right hand to begin our trip. I have prepared sufficient callers so that you can call me at any moment.

Questions:

What is the name of the speaker?

What is he going to take us to do?

What should we do if we want to begin our trip?

Section C Longer Conversations

I’m Gwen Outen with the VOA Special English Economics Report.

The Walt Disney Company is the second largest media company in the United States after Timer-Warner. It is worth fifty-seven thousand million dollars.

Walt Disney and his brother Roy started the company by making short animated films called cartoons. In 1928, the brothers produced Steamboat Willie, a cartoon starring Mickey Mouse. The Disney brothers then made several very successful full-length animated cartoon movies. They also began selling products linked to the characters in their movies.

Walt Disney wanted to expand into other forms of entertainment. In 1955, he opened the Disneyland amusement park in California. In 1971, Walt Disney World opened in Orlando, Florida. It is the most popular holiday area in the United States. There are also Disney parks in Tokyo, Japan and Paris, France. Disneyland in HongKong is expected to open in September.

Questions:

When was the cartoon Steamboat Willie produced?

Which of the following Disney Parks was not open yet when this report was given?

What is this report mainly about?

W: Hello, this is the Admission Office of the University of Oregon. Can I help you?

M: School report. Yes, I took it down. And the second?

W: Second you need to provide a bank letter showing your ability to pay for your lessons.

M: Where can I take the test?

W: You can take TOEFL test in your own country.

M: I see. What is your minimum requirement for TOEFL test score?

W: The minimum requirement of our university is 500.

M: What if I can not meet your minimum requirement for the score?

W: If your score is below 500, you must first take language courses before you become a regular student.

W: Well, I should say everything was impressive there. It’s hard to say which was more impressive.

M: I see. I’ll go there for a visit some time next year.

W: How did you spend your National Day vacation?

M: I went to Beijing for an exhibition.
