The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) collects information on the college job market. NACE’s latest survey in March found that employers expected to hire twenty-two percent fewer graduates this year than last year. Most blame the recession (衰退). The most recent student survey showed that just one-fifth of those who looked for jobs before graduation have one by now. This is compared to half of students who had looked for a job by this time two years ago. But there is one difference: fewer of this year’s graduates have started to search for jobs. Still, NACE found no big increase in graduates who plan to stay in school and avoid the job market. About twenty-seven percent said they plan to go to graduate school, compared to about twenty-four percent a year ago. So how can students increase their chances for a job? The most effective tool is a school’s career counseling(咨询)center. Counselors can help students with job applications and preparations for interviews. They also let students know about job openings and events like job recruitment fairs. They can also help first-year students decide what to study. Another way to look for a job is to do an internship (实习). This is when a student gets experience in a position that may or may not be paid. The latest NACE survey found that seventy-three percent of graduates who did get jobs had completed an internship. 21. Why are employers hiring fewer graduates this year? A. Because employers do not want to hire graduates. B. Because the quality of the graduates is bad. C. Because graduates lack work experience. D. Because the economy is not good this year. 22. What is the percentage of students who plan to do further study? A. 20%. B. 27%. C. 24%. D. 50%. 23. What is the most effective tool for graduates to find jobs? A. To ask relatives to recommend them. B. To read want ads in the newspaper. C. To go to job recruitment fairs. D. To go to the school’s career counseling center. 24. What can we infer from the passage? A. It’s not easy to get a job this year. B. Graduates do not want to work. C. Internship experience does not help students get jobs. D. The salaries of graduates who get jobs are lower this year. B The procedures for renting an apartment in different cities and areas can differ widely, and thus, knowing what to expect can help you in your apartment search. First of all, you should decide on the type of the apartment you want to rent. How big of a place do you need? How much money are you willing to spend? Is public transportation available nearby? Is it noisy or quiet? Is the area safe or not? What kind of person is your next-door neighbor or roommate? Think carefully about the place for you. Next, many apartments are advertised in the local newspaper, and these listings generally describe the size, location and the environment of the place. Looking over these ads will give you a general idea of the types of apartment available. Ask your friends and teachers if they can recommend any specific place for you to live. Compare what they tell you with what you find in the newspaper. Then, you should find out the exact costs for renting an apartment and determine your budget. In addition to your first month’s rent, you might have to pay a security deposit to cover any damage to the apartment. The amount will be given back when you move out, but you should not expect to receive the entire amount because the house owners sometimes use this money for regular maintenance, including carpet cleaning and new paint. Finally, be sure to carefully read and understand the terms of the rental agreement. Can you keep pets in the apartment? Is smoking allowed? How much notice do you need to give the landlord before you move out? Ask questions if you aren’t sure. 25. How many steps are there for renting an apartment, according to the passage? A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six. 26. What things should you consider in the first step? A. The neighborhood. B. The transportation. C. The size of the house D. All of the above. 27. Where can you find many apartment advertisements, according to the passage? A. In the newspaper. B. From teachers and classmates. C. From the billboard at school. D. From TV. 28. Why will you probably not get the total security deposit back, according to the passage? A. Because the landlords are usually greedy. B. Because the money may be spent on daily repairs. C. Because you destroy the rental agreement. D. Because the landlords will save the money for your studies. C In the past, 11-year-old Michal Bodzianowski knew very little about beer. However, encouraged by his teacher, he tested a way for astronauts to brew beer in space. What is even more surprising is that Michal’s way of brewing beer will be tested soon in the International Space Station. His idea of brewing beer is not for astronauts to have fun but for future human residents to have something to drink in space. Michal said that he discovered the magic of beer in a book. So when his teacher asked the class to think of ideas for the Space Science Competition, Michal suggested the beer as a way to help future space residents. Fortunately for him, his teacher thought it was a brilliant idea and instructed him to do research on it with a team of other students. After that, Michal’s work was sent to the organizer of the competition. It was very lucky for him that his work was among the 11 works which were selected out of the 744 works submitted by 3,900 students all over the country. The selected works will be tested in space by astronauts during their next flight. In order to prepare his experiment, Michal will receive a real research mini-laboratory. He will put his ingredients into a tube. Then the tube will be sent to the International Space Station. When it arrives, the astronauts will combine all the ingredients according to the instructions sent by Michal. Meanwhile, the young boy and his team will do the same experiment on earth and compare the results with those of the astronauts. If the experiment is successful, future space residents may one day have Michal’s beer in space. What’s Michal’s idea?____________. Brewing beer in space for astronauts to have fun Brewing beer for future space residents Selling beer in space Taking beer to space from the earth Which of the following is NOT true according to the text? Michal’s work was selected out of 744 works. Michal will do the experiment on earth while the astronauts do in space. Michal will do the experiment on earth with the astronauts. Michal knew little about beer before he did the experiment. What does the underlined word “submitted”? mean here? Posted. B. Sold. C. Recommended. D. Given.
