I miss you ,Dad. I almost laugh out when I see you in myself, from the thinning hair on my head to the ways I respond to everyday things. It makes me realize that you are a part of me and will always be in my heart. It brings me a warm smile as I remember how you taught me about character, honesty, integrity ,and self-respect. You taught me to enjoy my work. You taught me to share, for only by giving something do I truly receive something. You taught me about love, as you loved all seven of us children so much. You set a good example to us by being at church each time the door was open. I was watching you as you led our family in prayer each night before going to bed. Through you Dad, I learned what is truly important in life. I now know that you continue to live with me and I hope I have passed the valuable traits down to my kids.

You lost your father when you were only two years old. Your mother fell ill when you were 13 years old. You knew that dropping out of middle school and helping provide for your mother were necessities. So you did three jobs a day to support your mother and after you got married you worked even harder to support your family.

So, parents ,especially fathers, remember that you do make a difference by what you teach your children. You can make a difference to the world.

Children, now is the right time to express your love and thanks to your dads for what they do for you. A big hug, a warm thank-you, and living a life of purpose will give them more joy than you can imagine.

B. he is like his dad in appearance and behavior.

A. He also learned a lot from his father.

B. He lived a difficult life when young.

C. He earned his living by working hard at a local church after getting married.

D. He started supporting his mom upon graduating from

We can learn from the second paragraph that the author’s dad was ______.

A. fortunate B. faithful C. responsible D. generous

4. The underlined word “traits” in para.1 probably means “__________”.

A. information B. standard C. advice D. qualities

Twenty?years?ago,?I?drove?a?taxi?for?a?living. One night?I?went to pick up a?passenger at 2:30 AM. When?I?arrived to collect,?I?found the building was dark except?for?a?single light in?a?ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, “Just?a?minute,” answered?a?weak, elderly voice.

After?a?long pause, the door opened.?A?small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was?a?small suitcase. I?took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.

She kept thanking me?for?my kindness. “It’s nothing,”?I?told her. “I?just try to treat my passengers the way?I?would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such?a?good man.” She said. When we got into the?taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,”?I?answered quickly.

“Oh,?I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to?a?hospice(临终医院).?I don’t have any family left. The doctor says?I?don’t have very long.”

I?quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).

For?the next two hours, we?drove?through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been?a?ballroom where she had gone dancing as?a?girl.

Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of?a?particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said,”?I’m tired. Let’s go now.”We?drove?in silence to the address she had given me.

“How much do?I?owe you?” she asked.

“Nothing.”?I?said.

“You have to make?a?living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,”?I?answered.

Almost without thinking,?I?bent and gave her?a?hug. She held into me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman?a?little moment of joy.”

9. The old woman chose to ride through the city in order to ______.

A. show she was familiar with the city

C. let the driver earn more money

D. reach the destination on time

10. The?taxi?driver did not charge the old woman because he ______.

A. wanted to do her?a?favor

B. shut off the meter by mistake

C. had received her payment in advance

D. was in?a?hurry to take other passengers

11. What can we learn from the story?

A. Giving is always?a?pleasure.

B. People should respect each other.

D. People should learn to appreciate others’ concern.

Failure is mother of success, as the Chinese saying goes. I know it is not easy as parents to see our children failing. However, there is great value in “failure”.

I remember many years ago when I was a student leader, I organized a camp with my committee, which turned out to be a disaster. We scheduled activities too close together, and didn’t assign(分配) enough time for meal and bath.

My leaders, who I thought were thoroughly angry with us, led us lead, nevertheless. They kept us in check, and had a few talks with us during the camp and we readjusted the schedule. They gave us the freedom to lead and also the freedom to fail.

Many years down the road, I was a guest speaker at a similar camp. Again, it was a disaster for different reasons. The student wrote a schedule, and the leaders rewrote it. The student came up with a menu, and the leaders changed it. While at the camp, the leaders amended (修改) the schedule further. The poor committee couldn’t attempt to lead without being ignored by their leaders.

To be sure, I learned more from my failed camp than the one at which I was a guest. Having the skills to plan a camp at 16 set the foundation (基础) for future skills to plan a project and see it through at the workplace.

As parents, many of us have much about how success arises from failure. The history of silence is filled with such stories: an experiment that went hopelessly wrong eventually led to something right.

Most successes are achieved through persistence(坚持), and often only after persevering through failures, sometimes many times over. We only succeed because of a failure.

12.In the first paragraph the author want to say that _______.

A. children are more likely to fail than adults

B. Parents should allow children to make mistakes

C. parents should know how to lead their children to succeed

D. parents should help their children know the value of failure

13.Why did the author fail to organize a successful camp?

A. Because he didn’t arrange enough activities

B. Because he didn’t prepare meals for campers.

C. Because he didn’t arrange the time reasonably

D. Because he didn’t take advice from the leaders.

14.It can be inferred from the passage that the author’s leaders ______.

A. were disappointed with the students

B. were not good at giving advice

C. were strict with the students

D. were patient with the students

15.By attending the two camps, the author learned that ______.

A. leaders should care much about students’need.

B. students should be given enough freedom

C. students should make a schedule by themselves

D. students should ignore leaders’orders.
