In England, winter is not very cold and summer is not very hot. There is not a great difference between summer and winter. Why is this?

Because England is a large island country. In winter the sea is warmer than the land. The winds from the sea bring warm air to England, so it has a mild winter. And in summer the winds bring cool air to England, so it has a cool summer.

The wet winds from the west blow over England all the year. They bring rain to England. The winds must blow over the highland in the west. They drop more rain there. So there is more rain in the west of England than in the east of England.

The four seasons are all three months long. Winter is in December, January, February, Spring is in March, April and May. Summer is in June, July and August. Autumn is in September, October and November.

Wave are beautiful to look at. But they pull down ships at sea. They can wash away fields and buildings on land. The winds blow across the sea and push little waves into bigger and bigger ones.

If the wind is strong enough, the waves will be big enough. And if the winds blow longer, the waves will be larger. In a small river there will never be big waves. But at sea the wind can build up great waves.

If the wind is blowing at ten kilometers an hour, most waves at sea will be about one meter high. If it is blowing at one hundred and twenty kilometers an hour, most waves will be about twelve meters high. In 1933 the USN(美国海军) reported the largest wave in history. It rose to thirty-four meters high.

At that time, the sailor came in . He looked at the table and said, “Mother, what have you done with the tea?” “I boiled it as you said.”“And what did you do with the “water”?”

“I throw it away, of course.” Answered the old woman.
