Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal , he begins to think about an overcoat ; when a manager gets a new sports car , a big house and pleasure boats dance into view.

The many needs of mankind might be made up of several levels . When there is money enough to satisfy one level of needs, another level appears.

The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this level is satisfied, the second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World War Ⅱ, these needs were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth and our minds, we now may seek to ensure health, safety and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

D. learned to build houses

22. It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War Ⅱ, most Americans ______.

24. What is the people’s main concern on the fourth level?

A. More goods.

D. More earnings.

25. The author tends to think that the fifth level _______.

A. would be easier to attain than the fourth level

B. would be more concerned with social services

C. would lose interest in “physical satisfaction”

D. would be attainable before the government takes action

How to Fend off Computer Viruses

WASHINGTON—Considering the serious warnings lately about Internet viruses, users may be tempted to unplug their machines just to keep them safe. In reality, common sense and a few basic tips can keep Internet surfers secure.

Anti-virus software is a must, and it should be updated(更新) at least once a week to recognize newly released viruses.

People with broadband Internet connections should also have a firewall. These protect the computer from attacks by hackers.

Then it is time to think about computer habits. Unlike old viruses, which spread only through shared diskettes, the Internet brings viruses straight to the email-box. If an e-mail with attachment comes from an unknown sender, or unexpectedly from a known sender, it should not be opened.

On receipt of an unexpected attachment from a friend, experts suggests a telephone call to make sure of the mail’s source before opening.

26. Why should anti-virus software be updated at least once a week? Because _______.

A. the newly published anti-virus software is more expensive

B. the previous anti-virus software cannot work any longer

C. the inventors of viruses have suggested this idea

D. computer viruses are always developing

D. Whenever you receive an e-mail, you should make a call to ensure its source.

30. Which of the following is NOT right according to the passage?

A. We can do something to keep our computers safe.

B. Anti-virus software made in 1995 is hard to protect today’s computers.

C. We should unplug our computers to fend off viruses.

D. Even an e-mail attachment coming from a friend may not be safe to open.

32 Imagine no flowers with their sweet smells, their beautiful colors and their lovely shapes. Imagine , when the wind blows, we are not able to hear the leaves of the trees or watch the branches swing from side to side.

33 That is why we have parks full of trees and flowers. That is why people always like houses with room for some grass and a garden.

Do you talk to your plants? 34 peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, writers of a book called The Street of Plants, tell of an experiment in which two seeds were planted in different places. While the plants were growing, one plant was given love and hopeful ideas. 35 Under the earth it had more and longer roots; above the earth, it had a thicker stem and more leaves.
