Possible?version:?

Dear Sir,?

I’m writing in response to your advertisement for speakers to talk about the prevention and treatment of Ebola disease in the Model United Nations of our school. I’m?Li Hua, a?student in Senior 2. I think I am highly qualified to be a candidate for the following reasons.

To start with, over the past few months, I have been concerned about Ebola disease, the hot topic discussed worldwide and collected much related information. Besides, I have won the first prize in the English Speech Contest of our school recently, which shows my English has improved dramatically. What’s more, not only do I have outgoing personality, but also I’m good at cooperating with different kinds of people.

I would appreciate it if you could consider my application and offer me a chance.

Looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely yours,

Li Hua

Text 1

W: Don’t move! Stay where you are with your hands up!

M: Forgive me, madam. I’ve only stolen a pair of shoes.

W: Come this way with me.

Text 2

M: $15.99 for the vase is too expensive. I will pay only $10 for it.

W: Done, sir. It’s yours for $ 10.

M: Would you please wrap it up for me?

W: Sure.

Text 3

W: I heard you’ve sold your car. You don’t need one now?

M: Not really. I’ve never liked driving anyway. Now we’ve moved to a place near the underground railway

station. And transport now is not a problem for me.

Test 4

M: I have a sore throat and my chest hurts.

W: How long have you been like this?

M: Two or three days now.

W: I think you have got the flu. There is a lot of it going around. OK, take this medicine and go straight to bed.

Text 5

W: Jack! Do you want to see a picture of my new puppy?

M: Sure. I thought people only showed off pictures of their new babies, not new pets!

W: Well, this is my new baby. He’s just as much trouble. That’s for sure! But, he’s a lot of fun!

M: I see what you mean. He’s really cute. How old is he?

Text 6

M: I want to redo the bedroom to go with my new furniture.

W: How would you like to decorate your bedroom?

M: I want to keep the original bed, and change the wallpaper.

W: Have you settle on the wallpaper you prefer?

M: Not yet. This room needs jollying up. How about yellow and red wallpaper?

W: I don’t think it goes very well with your furniture. Yellow and red wallpaper is too busy.

M: Can you find the one that matches the furniture?

W: I think white wallpaper can lighten the room. It will go well with your furniture.

Text 7

M: Good morning. Mr. Carson, please?

W: I’m afraid Mr. Carson is in a very important meeting at the moment and cannot be disturbed. May I know who’s calling?

M: Yes, this is Mr. Prince. I would like to talk to Mr. Carson today, if possible.

W: Well, I’m afraid the meeting isn’t scheduled to finish until one o’ clock and then he has a lunch appointment. If he has time, I could ask him to ring you before he leaves.

M: Yes, I’d be grateful if you would.

W: Right then, Mr. Prince. Could I take your telephone number and then I’ll ask Mr. Carson to ring you as soon as he is free.

M: Yes, it’s Hong Kong, 68261427 extension 4036.

W: Hong Kong, 68261427 extension 4036. Right, I’ve got it.

M: Thank you.

Text 8

M: Hello, Wilhelmina. I notice quite a lot of black smoke coming out of the chimneys of the factory near our school. It all adds to the air pollution.

W: Yes, it does. But I hear that the factory leaders have promised to take measures.

M: I hope they will keep their promise.

W: I think they will. They have promised that a special machine will be installed at the end of this year. It will take in the fine dust in the smoke before it pours into the air.

M: That’s good. Dust does us a great deal of harm. I know that because my family lives near a steelworks. Its chimney keeps on pouring out black smoke.

W: Well, you see, now we do not eat the fish from the lake near the steelworks.

M: Because the waste has polluted the lake.

W: Why don’t the owners do anything to clean up the pollution?

M: They always promise, but never act. A bit of action, that’s what we need.

W: You’re right.

Text 9

W: So, did you get all the classes you wanted?

M: Yes, what about you?

W: I got all but one. How many credits are you signed up for?

M: I’m taking twelve credits this semester.

W: That’s not too bad. I’m signed up for five classes.

M: That’s fifteen credits, right?

W: Yeah. Do you have to buy a lot of books?

M: Yes. I have to buy fourteen books just for my four classes!

W: Oh! That’s a lot. Are they available in paperback (平装的)?

M: Only some of them. Most of the books are hardcover (精装的). It’s going to cost a fortune.

W: Well, you’re better off than I am. I have to buy twenty books!

M: Twenty? That’s crazy! When could you possibly read so many books?

W: Yeah, but this is what you get at a good school.

M: You’re right. I suppose it’ll be worth it. I am just worried about a few of my courses.

W: Me too. A few of them look tough. I wish I knew more students, so I could get to know the teachers better.

M: And which should be avoided.

W: But all the hard work will pay off, I suppose.

M: Yeah, you’re right. That’s the reason we are here—to learn.

W: Would you like to come with me to the bookstore now?

M: I’ve got to find my roommate in the library. See you.

Text 10

In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a “gap year”, a year off between high school and college. The most common reason for a “gap year” is to have a chance to travel. But some international students may take a gap year to meet requirements at home for military duty. Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education.

Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy.

However, a gap-year is not for everyone. Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college. And some parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off. Another problem is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly.

Holly Bull is the president of the Center for Interim Programs. Her company specializes in helping students plan their gap year. She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books, along with media attention and the availability of information on the Internet, have increased interest in the idea of a year off.
