It’s a mountainous area in the county of Cumbria. Famous for its beautiful countryside and lakes, it’s a popular destination. Even in these days of cheap foreign travel, it still gets over 14 million tourists a year. The biggest tourist attractions are the lakes and mountains. Many visitors come to walk and climb the fells (as the mountains are called in Cumbria). Unfortunately for tourists, the Lake District is also the wettest part of England, and it’s famous for its rain. In the summer, the weather can be quite warm and sunny, but there’s often a lot of rain, too. The fells are foggy all year round, and climbers and walkers need to be very careful. The Lake District has always been a popular place to live for writers. In fact, many famous authors have lived and worked there. Arthur Ransome, author of the popular Swallows and Amazons books for children, used the lakes as a setting for many of his adventure stories. William Wordsworth, the 19th century poet, lived in Grasmere and Randal Mount. He wrote his poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud there. He was inspired to write it after seeing daffodils(水仙) growing near Ullswater, the second largest lake in the Lake District. However, the most famous Lake District writer is Beatrix Potter. She’s the author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, one of the most popular children’s books of all times. She lived in Near Sawrey, a small village in the center of the Lake District. One thing many visitors comment on is the way people speak. The locals have a strong accent and use some words which are not common in other parts of England. For example, “a beck” is a small river and “a tarn” is a small lake. Experts believe that many Cumbrian dialect words come from Old Norse, the language spoken by the Vikings, who came to the area in the 10th century. The Lake District is a fascinating place with something for everyone. So, next time you want a relaxing and healthy holiday in the UK, why not visit the Lakes? Many rushed to stores to buy as much iodized salt (加碘盐)as possible because of the rumor that iodized salt could help prevent radiation poisoning spreading from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Consumers also worried that the nuclear cloud might spread to China by air and sea, polluting food sources, including salt taken from the sea. The wave of panic buying spread quickly across the country, driving up salt prices by five to ten times in some cities. Even regions rich in salt production, like Jiangxi Province, faced sudden shortages. The government took measures to guarantee enough supply and to stabilize(稳定)the market. It also dismissed the nuclear rumors, saying the nuclear fallout was unlikely to reach the country, and that salt did not help to prevent radiation poisoning. Local governments have stepped in to stabilize the market, too. As well, state-owned salt companies have been urged to increase their supply.
