My students often tell me that they don’t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork.

My reply is often a brief “You have as much time as the president.” I usually carry on a bit about there being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.

Once in graduate school(研究院), I tried to prove to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant(不相关的). What’s important is the quality of your work.” Since then I have. had time to think carefully about the “hard worker” dodge (诀窍) , and I have come to some conclusions—all relevant to the problem of how much time we have.

If you analyze(分析) the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”, which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the problem of “work” during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it’s not how hard one works but the quality of the product that’s important.

That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office: “Don’t work harder. Work smarter.” There is a lot of sense in that idea.

If you can’t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.

Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies.

C. You’ll try to improve your skills in reading and writing if you’re a clever student.

Before the 1970s, in southwestern Virginia, there was only one high school in Roanoke, where the students were 100% black. This was Lucy Addison High School, named after Virginian educator Lucy Addison.

Lucy Addison grew up on a farm, which her father purchased after the Civil War. She attended a private school in Philadelphia, where the teaching staff are all black people. Miss Addison graduated in 1882 with a teaching diploma(文凭). Lucy Addison first taught in Loudoun County. Four years later, in 1886, she moved to Roanoke where she taught at the First Ward Colored School. In January 1887, Miss Addison was named as temporary principal(临时校长). A larger school building was made available in 1888. At this time, Miss Addison was named as an assistant principal.

For the next thirty years, she was an inspiration(鼓舞人的人) to generations of African American students. In 1918, Addison became principal of the new Harrison School, which only had classes from Grade One to Grade Eight. High school diplomas were unavailable during this time for black students in Roanoke. By gradually introducing new courses, Miss Addison eventually developed a full high-school curriculum in her school. Her hard work was recognized in 1924 by The State Board of Education(州教育委员会). Addison, who never married or had children, retired at the end of the 1926~1927 school year. In January 1928, the Roanoke City School Board announced that a new high school for African American students would be named in honor of Miss Lucy Addison. The official opening of Lucy Addison High School was on April 19, 1929, with Miss Addison in attendance.

In 2011, a play about the life and times of Lucy Addison was performed and got good reviews. Lucy made her mark in life as an educator and received an honor that no citizen of Roanoke had. She left so many legacies(遗产). She is not just a pioneer for education but a heroine(女英雄).

25. When did Lucy Addison start her teaching career?

A. In 1882. B. In 1886. C. In 1887. D. In 1888.

26. What does the underlined word “curriculum” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

28. How is this text mainly developed?

An indoor house cat made an unbelievable journey after disappearing on a family outing and returning to her hometown by traveling about 200 miles over two months.

Holly, a 4-year-old cat, was separated from her owners Jacob and Bonnie Richter in Daytona Beach, Florida, in early November.

Two months later, on New Year’s Eve, Holly was found in a family’s backyard about a mile from the Richters’ house in West Palm Beach. She was weak and exhausted.

Her owners are unsure of how Holly found her way home. “Her pads(肉趾) on her feet were bleeding,” Ms Richter said. “Her claws(爪子) are worn down. The front ones are really sharp, the back ones worn down to nothing.”

Even scientists are baffled by how the house cat managed to travel nearly 200 miles back home.

“Are you sure it’s the same cat?” John Bradshaw, director of the University of Bristol’s Anthrozoology Institute, told the New York Times. But Holly had an implanted microchip(嵌入的微芯片) to allow people to identify her.

Dr. Bradshaw says Holly may have gotten a lift and perhaps hid under the hood(发动机罩) of a truck heading down Florida’s I-95.

However the condition of her paws suggests Holly didn’t get a ride during her way home, nor did she travel easily.

Scientists say it is more common, although still rare, to hear of dogs returning home. Dr. Bradshaw said dogs may have inherited(继承) their genetic relative wolves’ ability to navigate(领航) using magnetic clues(磁场的线索). It is also possible that dogs get taken on more family outings, and that lost dogs are more easily noticed by people along the way, scientists say. Cats, on the other hand, typically navigate well around familiar landscapes, memorizing locations by sight and smell,
