Douglas, a description is given of people helping others but doing it secretly. When difficult problems worried an individual, friends nearby would meet to discuss possible solution without the individual knowing their actions. When a solution was agreed upon, one or two of the friends would carry out the plan and solve the problem secretly , to the great delight of the worried individual. The helpers would stand by privately, content with their success. No reward was given to the problem solvers, not even a sincere “thank you”, because they were never known. This concept is popular today but in a different way. The phrase “pay it forward” is now used when one person helps another. However, the person helped may not be able to repay the person or group that helped them. So rather than return the favor to their helpers, they are supposed to help someone else in the future, which means they pay it forward. It is a sense of responsibility which makes us want to give back in equal measure to the one who has helped us. But , in this case, the responsibility turns to helping someone in the future. Suppose your elderly grandmother pays part of your schooling. She may tell you there is no need to repay her because it is a gift from someone who loves you very much. Nothing would please her more than to have you use her money to get a good education. You may never be able to repay her for such a gift. However, she not only gave you some money , but she provided you with an example that you should also help other people who need it. People with serious needs are everywhere. Many are children who need better clothes, more books and even better schools. Some are elderly people who can’t afford their medicine or a doctor’s care. Consider how you can “pay it forward” rather than pay money back to your grandmother. 21. The helpers in the book “Magnificent Obsession” were not rewarded because ______. A. they hadn’t solved the problems thoroughly B. they had solved the problems secretly C. they were friends of the worried individual D. they expected to be paid back in the future 22. The underlined word “pay it forward” means ____________________. A. to repay someone who has helped you B. to pay someone else who needs help C. to help someone who has helped you D. to help someone else who needs help 23. What does the writer suggest with the example of “your elderly grandmother”? A. We should learn to respect our grandparents. B. We should work hard to get a good education. C. We should also lend a hand to other people in need of help. D. We should never forget to repay people for their help. B Movie makers at one time worried that they might be put out of business by television. Recently, however, more and more people have been going to the movies. This may be partly because the economic situation in America has worsened. When at the movies, people forget their troubles, as they get involved in the story on the screen. Also, directors have recently been producing pictures that large numbers of people want to see. Americans in the millions are returning to their love affair with the movies. Motion picture 电影industry experts see two main factors responsible for this: an increased need by Americans to escape from economic worries and a large number of new movies with broad audience appeal. 25. Why are so many people going to see movies now? A. Because people now have much more money. B. Because people have troubles. C. Because people wanted to escape from real life. D. Because watching movies is now much cheaper than watching TV. 26. According to Jack Valenti, why have movies become popular? A. Because America’s economy is bad and people want to escape from their economic worries. B. Because a large number of new movies have broad audience appeal. C. Because the directors have cut the budget in making movies. D. Because the films are worth seeing and are excellent motion pictures. 27. What’s the passage mainly about? A. That more American people are watching movies than before. B. That television will take the place of movies. C. America’s economic depression. D. That Americans prefer to watch movies rather than watch TV. C On the first day of the 11th grade, our new math teacher Mr Washington asked me to go to the blackboard to do a math problem. I told him that I couldn’t do it. He asked, “Why not?” I paused, and then I said, “Because I’m educable mentally retarded (可教育智能迟滞).” He came from behind his desk and looked at me. “Don’t ever say that again. Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality,” he said. It was a very special moment for me. Doctors said that I was educable mentally retarded in the fifth grade, and I was put back into the fourth grade. When I was in the eighth grade, I failed again. But Mr Washington changed my life. This person always gave students the feeling that he had high expectations of them, and then all of the students did their best to live up to what those expectations were. He often said, “You have greatness within you.” One day, I caught up with him in the parking place and said, “Mr Washington, is there greatness within me, sir?” He said, “Yes, Mr Brown.” “But what about the fact that I failed English, math, and history? What about that, sir? I’m slower than most kids.” “It doesn’t matter. It just means that you have to work harder. Your grades don’t determine who you are or what you can produce in your life.” “I want to buy my mother a house.” “It is possible, Mr Brown. You can do that.” And he turned to walk away. “Mr Washington?” “What do you want now?” “Uh, I’m the one, sir. One day you’re going to hear my name. I’m the one, sir.” School was a real struggle for me. Mr Washington put many demands on me. He made me believe that I could do it. At the end of that year, I was on the honor roll for the first time in my life. Years later, I produced five programs on public television. When one of my programs was shown on the educational television channel, I had some friends call him. I was sitting by the phone waiting when he called me. He said, “May I speak to Mr Brown, please?” “Oh, Mr Washington, is that you?” “Yes, it’s me. You were the one, weren’t you?” “Yes, sir, I was.” 28. What does Mr Washington mean by saying “Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality”? A. You needn’t have the same opinion as others. B. You should believe what other people say. C. What other people say about you may not be correct. D. The doctor made a mistake. 29. How many years did it take the author to finish the tenth grade? A. Ten years. B.
