Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for attending our company’s news conference. As you know, with the development of economy, people have to face various pressures. They don’t have enough time to attend to the old people in their family, which has become a prominent social problem. Our company put out a household robot, which is designed to take care of old people. It can cook meals at a fixed time which can be adjusted according to individual needs. It can also accompany old people in having a chat, playing chess, and taking exercise. Moreover, it can deal with emergencies. For example, if an old man falls ill suddenly, the robot will call doctors for help.

It would be a great help to you if you own such a robot.

W: I got a raise.

M: Hey, that’s great news. When?

W: Just heard on Monday.

M: Congratulations.

W: Thanks. I’m really pleased. How about you? How’s work?

M: A bit slow. I can’t complain, though.

W: It’s James’ birthday today. We’re going to see Wheat after school. Want to come?

M: After school? I’ve got to study for the chemistry test tomorrow.

W: Don’ t worry. The test will be easy.

M: Er ... I don’t know. What time is the film?

W: Four fifteen.

M: I think I’ll stay back in school and do some review first. Then I’ll join you.

W: OK. We’ll get the tickets first. You meet us at Kelly’s Corner at four o’clock. We’ll have some

ice cream there before the film starts.

M: Let’s go to the bookstore in St. George after the film. There’s a sale and I’d like to get a book.

W: OK. See you later at Kelly’s.

M: Yes. Er... Mrs Weiss?

W: Come in then. You’ll be up at the university?

M: Er ... yes. I’m going to be teaching a course in ...

W: Well, come on then. Right. Here’s the living room, next to the kitchen as you can see. There’s

M: Yes, of course. And, I see there’s a phone there. Is it OK to call home?

M: OK. Right, I see. And is it OK to use the phone anytime? Ah, there’s a time difference, so if I

have to call late at night or something...

W: That’s fine, but late at night you should talk quietly.

M: Yes, of course.

W: Hello, and welcome to the school. I thought it would be best if I show you round the school and then I can speak to you each. OK, now, we’re here at the reception desk, which is where you come if you have any questions or want to see anyone. lf you look just past the hallway you can see the big hall. We use this as a place for parents’ meetings and we have concerts here at the end of term. We can fit all our parents and children in there. Then over by the glass doors is the library. We use this in lessons and the children can go there between lessons as well. We try to buy new books every term but it depends how much money we have. Then, next to the reception desk here, is my office and you can make an appointment to see me at any time. I’m often here after school if you’re working, so just call my assistant to fix the time. And finally, over there in the corner by the water machine is the computer room. We try to use this at least once a day with the children. Now, if you follow me ...
