Once my father told me a story. When my father was ten years old, he went treasure hunting with his sister — Sophia, who was only two years older than him. They heard some people talking about a treasure box that was supposed to be hidden in a cave near their house. One day during their summer vacation, they went there to look for the treasure. The cave was very dark but they had brought a flashlight and shined it around. They searched and searched but only found a box of stones. Then the battery in the flashlight started to die. They got scared and decided to go back. My father walked quickly but Sophia got stuck half way into a tunnel. He tried to pull her out but he couldn’t. He began to cry. Sophia asked him to find someone to help them.

My father ran up and down the street begging people to help his sister. Nobody would come. Some didn’t believe him and some didn’t want to get involved.

The only one who would help was a girl about his age, she got a rope and a spade. They returned to the tunnel and finally got Sophia out of it. My father and the girl became good friends. He asked her why she helped a stranger. She told him that there was an old saying, “Don’t be a bystander when someone else is bleeding.” She is now my mom and she is the treasure my father found.
