Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a 1 wants to borrow some money from you. You say, “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact you are not 2 of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to 3 his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this 4 a lie? Professor Gerald Gullion of the University of Southern California has made a 5 study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, 6 when telling a “white lie”, such as a woman at a party telling another woman that she likes her 7 when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the 8 . Other researchers say that men are more 9 to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are 10 to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liars hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also been done into the 11 of people’s behavior in a number of small, 12 unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they 13 to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch 14 parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The nose is very 15 to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (痒). 1. A. classmate B. friend C. stranger D. relative 2. A. sure B. aware C. fond D. short 3. Twenty-one years later, I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic — and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8. Our home was a complete zoo — a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams. 26. When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ________. A. a writer B. a teacher C. a judge D. a doctor 27. Why did the author quit school in her second year of college? A. She wanted to study by herself. B. She fell in love and got married. C. She suffered from a serious illness. D. She decided to look after her grandma. 28. What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5? A. She was busy yet happy with her family life. B. She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons. C. She wanted to remain a full-time housewife. D. She was too confused to make a correct choice. What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph? A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Little by little, one goes far. C. Every coin has two sides. D. Well begun, half done. 30. Which of the following can best describe the author? A. Caring and determined. B. Honest and responsible. C. Ambitious and sensitive. D. Innocent and single-minded. B It’s said that professional footballers in the USA can make millions of dollars throughout their careers. Yet statistics show that many eventually run out of money once their playing days are over. The University of Pennsylvania wants to change that and help teach American footballers how to rebuild their lives when their sports careers come to an end. “All their life they have focused on football. Deciding what comes next can be difficult.” Says professor Morvarid Taheripour, the head of the athletes’ project. “Some people say athletes die two deaths. You kind of die when you stop playing and you die in real life. So they’ve got to come back to life and figure out ‘How am I going to make a living at 25 for maybe another 40 years?” For Taheripour, the partnership with professional athletes is a dream to come true. “It was taking everything I love about teaching and yet being able to influence people who are accomplished and hard-working, yet very modest.” But even with help, figuring out the next chapter isn’t easy. Statistics show that 78 percent of professional football players are penniless, divorced or unemployed two years after retiring from their sport. The program tries to help players develop a plan for life after sport and 220 athletes have taken part over the past six years. Darwin Walker is one former student who avoided being a statistic. Today, he runs a number of successful businesses and thanks football for his accomplishments. “The concepts I learned about leadership have all come from playing the game of football,” says Walker. “The amount of study, amount of commitment, and time that you have to put into it is very much like being a successful business person.” Shifting the skills learned on the field to the workplace seems natural to some, but the numbers show that’s not the case for everyone. Taheripour’s message to his students is a serious one: This is the time to build for the future, he tells them, because no matter how long your athletic career lasts, you are so much more than just an athlete. 31. By saying “athletes die two deaths”, the author means ________. A. athletes suffer too many failures in their life B. athletes have a sports life and a real life C. being an athlete contributes little to life D. athletes’ later life can be easily rebuilt 32. Why is it difficult for professional athletes to decide what comes next? A. They might have not thought of this during their playing days. B. They have no idea whether to leave the game or not. C. They think as athletes they can make more money. D. They’re not willing to accept a new career. 33. What does Darwin Walker manage to avoid? A. Making his sports career come to an end. B. Being unsuccessful in rebuilding his life. C. Going through the problem. D. Making a difference. 34. What does the last paragraph imply? A. An athlete should think about more than his athletic career. B. An athlete’s sports career couldn’t last very long. C. An athlete should end his career earlier to build his new life. D. The longer an athlete’s career lasts, the more respect he receives. 35. The purpose of the passage is to ________. A. teach athletes how to manage their money B. show readers how to make a living themselves C. introduce a project helping retired athletes D. ask athletes to finish their sports career earlier C Of all the websites, one that has attracted attention recently is myspace.com. Most of this attention has come from the media and tells every reason why the website should be shut down. The threat of internet predators(窃掠者)is indeed a tough reality, but shutting down the site is not the answer. If myspace.com were shut down, another site would quickly take its place. Therefore, the right way is to teach teens how to use the site safely and educate them about who | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
