When planning to get together with friends, Julian said, “If I want to go and see a movie with a few friends, I usually send them text messages. By telephone, you have to call every single friend one by one. But text messaging allows you to send the same message to as many people as you’d like, which saves a lot of time.” Email, IM, and other low-cost methods of communication also help people keep long-distance friendships in ways they couldn’t have even a few years ago. Mike told us, “I had this friend when I was 8 or 9, and then she moved away to the country. We promised to stay friends and to send letters, and at the start we did. Then the letters got fewer and fewer and we at last stopped writing to each other. I think if we had had email, we would still be in touch.” James found out about cost the hard way. He said, “I called my friend in New Zealand, which is halfway around the world, and it cost me over $200! So now I just stay up late to see if I can catch him on MSN or I write an email.” Email, IM, and other low-cost ways of keeping in touch also allow people to develop brief acquaintances into long-lasting friendships. Andrea told us, “I met this really cool girl. We sometimes email each other. We’ve been in touch over half a year and it’s nice to talk to her.” 36. What is this passage mainly about? A. Technology has improved greatly. B. Technology can help our social lives. C. Technology keeps far-away friends close. D. Text messages bring advantages to our life. 37. How does Julian usually get in touch with a group of friends? A. By emailing them B. By chatting with them on MSN C. By sending them text messages D. By giving them a phone call. 38. In Mike’s opinion, he lost touch with his friend mainly because ____. A. they lost interest in keeping in touch B. their friendship was not strong enough C. they were too busy to write to each other D. they couldn’t use email to keep in touch then 39. What does James most probably think of calling his friend in New Zealand? A. Convenient. B. Costly C. Difficult D. Necessary B A Texas-sized piece of the Antarctic ice sheet is thinning, possibly due to global warming, and could cause the world’s oceans to rise significantly, polar ice experts said on Wednesday. They said “surprisingly rapid changes” were occurring in Antarctica’s Amundsen Sea Embayment, which faces the southern Pacific Ocean, but that more study was needed to know how fast it was melting and how much it could cause the sea level to rise. The warning came in a joint statement issued at the end of a conference of U.S. and European polar ice experts at the University of Texas in Austin. The scientists blamed the melting ice on changing winds around Antarctica that they said were causing warmer waters to flow beneath ice shelves. The wind change, they said, appeared to be the result of several factors, including global warming, ozone depletion(臭氧损耗) in the atmosphere and natural variability. The thinning in the two-mile-thick ice shelf is being observed mostly from satellites, but it is not known how much ice has been lost because data is difficult to obtain on the remote ice shelves, they said. Study is focusing on the Amundsen Sea Embayment because it has been melting quickly and holds enough water to raise world sea levels six meters, or close to 20 feet, the scientists said. “The place where the biggest change is occurring is the Amundsen Sea Embayment,” said Donald Blankenship of the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics. “One, it’s changing, and two, it can have a big impact,” he said in a Webcast with a number of conference participants. Other parts of the continent were also losing ice, he said, but generally not as quickly. 41. According to scientists, the certain factor to cause the Antarctica’s ice shelves to get thinner is ________. A. natural variability B. the changing winds C. ozone depletion D. global warming 42. What we can’t be sure about at present is ________. A. what has caused the ice shelves to melt B. whether the ice shelves are really melting C. how fast the ice sheet is melting D. where the ice melting is occurring 43. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. ice melting only occurs in Antarctica B. the Amundsen Sea Embayment is the remote | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
