第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

Small moments sometimes last a very long time. And a few words --- though they mean little at the time to the people who say them--- can have great power.

I recently heard a story from Malcoln Dalkoff, who has been a professional writer for the last 24 years, mostly in advertising.

As a boy, Dalkoff was terribly shy and helpless. He had few friends and no self--confidence. Then one day, his high-school English teacher, Ruth Brauch, asked the class to write their own chapter that would follow the last chapter of the novel since they had been reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Dalkoff wrote his chapter and turned in it. His teacher wrote four words in the paper: “This is good writing. ” Four words . They changed his life.

“Until I read those words, I had no idea of who I was or what I was going to be,” he said. “After reading her note, I went home and wrote a short story , something I had always dreamed of doing but never believe I could do.”

Over the rest of that year in school, he wrote many short stories and always brought them to Mrs. Brauch for instruction. “She was encouraging , helping and honest. She was just what I needed,” Dalfoff said.Later he was chosen as a co-editor of his high-school newspaper. His confidence grew; his knowledge broadened; he started off on a successful life with great achievements.

For his 30th high-school reunion, Dalkoff went back and visited Mrs. Brauch, who had retired. He told her what great effect the four words had had upon his life and because she had given him the confidence to be a writer, he had been able to pass that confidence on to the women who would become his wife, who became a writer herself.

26. What was the writer’s name?

A. Dalkoff B. Brauch C. Malcolm. D. The text doesn’t tell us

27. In his childhood, Dalkoff was ___________.

A. Shy B. hopeless C. unconfident D. A,B,C

28. Before reading the four words, Dalkoff didn’t know __________.

A. his name B. what he would do C. how old he was D. where he lived

I came to study in the United States a year ago .Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.

After the accident .my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.

But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time .The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.

My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.

Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time…and I left without getting a cent.

31. The author’s roommate offered to help him because________.

A. he felt sorry for the author

B. he thought it was a chance to make some money

D. he wanted the author to have a good lawyer

32. A good doctor is essential for the author to __________.

A. be properly treated

B. talk with the person responsible for the accident

The quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standard by 2010 and, a decade later, citizens in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world.

These were the goals set out by the Shanghai Water Authority. With the city’s population expected to increase only slightly and the economy to boom by 2020, Chen Yin, and official with the water authority, said Shanghai’s water consumption will not increase from its present amount.

Zhang Yue, director of the Urban Construction Division under the Ministry of Construction, said, “Shanghai is the first city in the country to publicize these ambitions. They will not be easy to achieve.”

He said water saving will help keep the sustainable development of China’s economy.

Saving one cubic meter of water means saving the city’s infrastructure(基础设施)costs by 10,000 Yuan. Last year, Shanghai saved 300 million cubic meters of water either from readjustment of industrial structure or the employment of new technology.

“The aim is to arouse public awareness of the seriousness of water shortages,” Chen said. “The abundant surface water and amount of rain of the city are so misleading that they result in improper use of water.”

Shanghai lacks drinkable water. The Huangpu River, which supplies 80 percent of the city’s drinkable water, is nearing exhaustion.

The city, therefore, has been exploring new sources from the Yangtze River and growing forests along it to conserve quality water.

Besides penning regulations, the authority is popularizing technology among the public to efficiently cut the amount of water used.

At present, the city has 600,000 family toilets, each using 13 liters of water per flush. These are to be renovated(整修)to use only 9 liters of water per flush.

The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households – at a cost of 40 Yuan each. In three years, all the toilets will be renovated, which saves the city nearly 15 million Yuan every year in water conservation.

Another task the city is engaged in is the treatment of sewage(污水)to improve the water environment.

At present the city can only treat 44 percent of its daily 5.04 million tons of waste water.
