Scientists recently made an amazing discovery.What appeared to be a common oak tree(橡树)was dug out from under 40 feet of sand and gravel(沙砾)in Southern Indiana last summer.

It wasn’t until several weeks ago that scientists began to look closer at the tree,and were surprised by what they found.Their common tree is believed to be anywhere from 6,000 to 30,000 years old .Scientists believe it was buried by a glacier(冰河)during the last ice age.

Radiocarbon(放射性碳)testing has been performed,and the tree’s exact age will not be known until the results are out in a couple of weeks. The tree will be used for developing scientific knowledge,but furniture store owners are also excited at theis discovery.If properly preserved ,the wood could be made into furniture , which because of the tree’s age , would be very expensive.

The old tree is not the only one buried in Southern Indiana, and everyone is anxious to see what else is down there . Dredge(挖掘) operator Eugene Meek ,who found the tree , said to The Associated Press, “There is more down there ,but you never really know what’s down there until you put it up.”
