II. 阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、 B、 C和D项中,选出最佳选项。

(A)

I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.

Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.

Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

26. The story took place exactly ____ .

A. in the teacher’s office B. in the school C. in an exam room D. in the language lab

27. The girl wanted to borrow a pen, because ____ .

A. she had not brought a pen with herself

B. she had lost her own pen on her way to school

C. her own pen had been taken away by someone

D. there was something wrong with her own pen

28. The teacher saw all this, so she asked the boy ____ .

A. to stay behind after the exam B. to stop whispering

C. to leave the room immediately D. to go on writing his paper

29. The thing(s) emphasized in her talk was(were) ____ .

A. sense of duty B. honesty C. seriousness D. all of the above

30. The boy knew everything ____ .

A. the moment he was asked to stay behind

B. when the teacher started talking about honesty

C. when he was walking out of the room

D. only some time later

(B)

Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.

Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossings and do not take any chances when crossing the road.

My next point is about litter (throwing away waste material in a public place). It is an offence to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.

Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years of age.

I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should contact your local police station, who will be pleased to help you.

Now, are there any questions?

31. The main purpose of this speech would be to ____ .

A. prepare people for international travel

B. give advice to travelers to the country

C. declare the different kinds of laws

D. inform people of the punishment for breaking laws

32. How many laws are there discussed in the speech?

A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six

33. From the speech we learn that ____

A. In this country, if you are under 18 years of age, you may not buy alcohol, but your friend can buy it for you.

B. You can’t make noise except at night.

C. Because the traffic moves on the right side of the road, you must use pedestrian crossings when crossing the road.

D. You may not buy cigarettes or tobacco unless you are above 16 years of age.

34. The underlined word “contact” in the seventh paragraph means ____ .

A. get in touch with B. keep in touch with C. join D. report

35. Who do you think is most likely to make the speech?

A. a teacher B. a worker C. a policeman D. a lawyer

As prices and building costs keep rising, the do-it-yourself (DIY) trend (趋势) in the U.S. continues to grow. “We needed furniture (家具) for our living room,” says John Ross, “And we just didn't have enough money to buy it. So we decide to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house. Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I've finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.” John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it -yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don't have time to take a course, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself. 36. We can learn from the text that many newly married people _______
