Text 2 M: Everyone is here except Tom. Maybe he is caught in a traffic jam. W: No. He called me yesterday and said that he had broken his right hand when he was riding his bike. Text 3 W: Dad, guess what? I got an A in the math test yesterday. M: Good job! I’m proud of you, my girl. Keep it up. Text 4 M: How many workers are there in your factory? About 200? W: I don’t know the exact number. Probably three times as much as that. Text 5 M: Hello, Mary, this is Tom speaking. Is your mother any better? W: Yes, she is recovering at home now. But the doctor says she has to stay in bed for several days. Text 6 M: Why do you look so upset, Bella? W: Well, I will have a math exam tomorrow and I really have to study. But my roommate has several friends visiting from her hometown. And I can’t hold my attention with them in the room. M: How about the school reading room? It is very quiet there. W: Yes, it is. But the reading room is closed this weekend for repairs. M: Yes, that is right. Did you try the classroom? It is open 24 hours a day, right? W: Some club is having meeting there and I was asked to leave this afternoon. M: Well, there is always the city library. It is not so pleasant to go out in this weather, but it is only ten-minute walk. W: Yes, I suppose so. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to walk in the rain. I guess it is the only way if I want to get any study done. I’d better hurry. Bye. Text 7 M: Oh, hi, Emily, I’m glad to meet you here. W: Hi, James. M: I’m having a party this Sunday. I’ve just moved into a new house in the city. We are starting about 5:30.Can you come? W: I’d love to. Thank you very much. M: Here is my address. W: Thanks. Storm Street, Jamestown. M: Right. The party will begin at 5:30 pm. W: I won’t forget and I will be there on time. M: See you then. W: Bye. Text 8 M: Hello, International Friend’s Club, can I help you? W: Oh, hello, I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find a bit more. M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club. We have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time. W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually. I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize? M: Well, we have social get-togethers, sports events and we also have language evenings. W: Could you tell me something about the language evening? M: Yes, every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their language, you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday, Spanish; Tuesday, Italian; Wednesday, German; and Friday, French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come. W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French. M: OK. If you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join, you can have the first month free. Text 9 W: Well, do you want to have a picnic on the West Lake on May 1st? M: That’s a good idea. And we can go boating for while, too. W: Then there is the party. M: Party? What party? W: Have you forgotten? Daniel and Emily invited us for dinner on the night of May 1st. M: I have forgotten. What time will we get home do you think? W: Probably late. Emily wants to go out after dinner to a place where we can dance. M: Then we will sleep all day on May 2nd. W: No, not all day. Don’t you have something special that you want to do on May 2nd? M: We talked about going to that new play. W: Oh. Yes, we can go in the evening. There are some new paintings in the art exhibition that I want to take a look at in the afternoon. M: It sounds like a busy holiday. W: Our holidays are always busy. But that’s why I like Hangzhou. There is always so much to do. Text 10 Don’t you think the world would be an easier place to live in if we all spoke the same language? There are thousands of different languages spoken around the globe, so it is no wonder we have such difficulties understanding one another. If you are going to choose a language which everyone in the world would learn, which would you choose? Chinese is spoken by more people than any other language. And English has already been selected as the international language of business and science. Many other people have tried to find an answer to this problem. One of them was Doctor Zamenhof, a polish word expert. In 1887, he introduced Esperanto, a totally new language to the world. Thousands of people took it seriously and began to learn to speak it. Today Esperanto is still spoken by 8 million people around the world. And it is a language accepted by the post office. So if you address some letter in Esperanto, it will get to the correct place. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
