She noticed that her family did not use signs like she did but talked with their mouths. She wanted to talk like them but no matter how she tried, people could not understand her. This made her very angry. As she got older, her anger became even worse. If she didn't get what she wanted she would shout and throw things until her family gave in. Once she even managed to lock her mother into a small room. Finally it became clear that something had to be done. So, just before her seventh birthday, the family were so worried about her that they decided to hire a private teacher - Anne Sullivan. Anne was careful to teach Helen especially what she was interested in. As a result Helen began to calm down and she learnt to read and write in Braille when she was ten years old.
