The ice-creams would be nice with the cake. M: Good idea! (Text 2) W: Michael, did you have a good holiday? M: No, not really. The weather was bad. It rained non-stop for three days. Next year I’ll go somewhere warm like Spain! (Text 3) W: Brian. First, you walk the dog in the morning before breakfast and clean your room before you go to school. In the evening you water the plants … M: Housework in the evening too, Mum? It’s unfair. (Text 4) M: The bus is late again, isn’t it? W: Yes, it is. Honestly, I’ve been late for work three times this week because of taking the bus. (Text 5) W: I don’t see any fresh food here. M: Yeah, but there’s lots of fat and sugar though. It’s terrible. W: Why is the food in the school canteen always so bad? M: I don’t know. I haven’t seen a good health food place near here, have you? (Text 6) M: How many customers have we got in today? W: Er … 6. M: 6? Is that all? I bet The Angel has more than 6 customers. W: Yes, it’s full. I walked past a few minutes ago. There were people waiting outside. M: Oh, dear. If we don’t get our customers back, we’re going to have to close it. W: That won’t happen. These are for table 2. And they want a bottle of red wine. Come on, hurry up. (Text 7) W: Good morning. Startime Theater Company. M: Hello, I’m calling about your help wanted ad at the college. Uh, what kind of job is it? W: We’re opening a new movie theatre. How is Tuesday morning at 10:00? M: I’m afraid I have a class at that time. Could we make it in the afternoon? W: Sure. How about 3:00? M: Great. (Text 8) W: You don’t look very well. How do you feel? M: I’ve caught a cold. I’m always sick. W: Hiro, you could drop a class. You’re taking too many classes, and you can’t do everything. M: But you’re taking the same amount of classes as I am. W: But I’m not working part-time. You also should stop eating fast food. I know you’re busy, but you always eat hamburgers and pizza. M: Yeah, I’ve been trying. Last week, I went to see a doctor. He said I had to stop smoking. He said I got sick very often because I smoked. W: Maybe he’s right. (Text 9) W: Guess who I saw in town this morning? M: Who? W: Philip. He has passed the test to be a doctor. He said he was working in a restaurant. M: Funny job for a doctor. W: He’s saving money. He told me that he was going to work abroad. He wants to help people. But he said that he’d be back next June. Then he’ll start working as a proper doctor. M: Hmm. W: He told me the flight was about $800. And then he said that he was working seven days a week. Well, I don’t think he should have to work that hard, do you? M: Yes … er … I mean no. W: Good. I’m so glad you agree. Because I told him we’d pay for his ticket. M: What?! W: Yes, he was very happy. So I got the money out of the bank this afternoon and gave it to him and I told him that it was a present from us both. M: And you didn’t want to discuss this with me first? W: What’s the point? You never listen to a word I say anyway. (Text 10) W: Um, I came to live here because my husband got a very good job here. That was twenty-two years ago, when I was 25 years old. And immediately I went into a very serious culture shock. I was so homesick. I didn’t want to learn English, I didn’t want to learn about this culture and I didn’t want American friends. I just went to stores that was Spanish, and I watched a lot of Spanish-language TV. My friends were all from Mexico. I only kept in touch with people from my country even though, you know, I didn’t have anything in common with them, really. I mean, I didn’t even like some of the people I spent time with. It was just that, uh, we were all from the same culture. Back in Mexico we probably never would have been friends. Anyway, I was unhappy and angry for a long, long time. Finally, after about ten years, I went back to Mexico. But it wasn’t really my home anymore. So after only one month, I turned around and came back here to the States. This is my home now. I’m here for good. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
