A When you leave school, you can breathe a sigh of relief and leave learning behind, right? Wrong! Learning should last a lifetime. You exercise your body to stay strong, and you should exercise your mind to stay sharp. An English idiom says, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." But scientists have discovered that isn't true. Older people can learn, and they should, in order to keep their brain active. Now a new trend has begun in several states in the US that encourages learning. Adults can attend One Day University. They can spend a Saturday or Sunday hearing four 70-minute lectures. Each one is given by a top university professor. One of the original participants said, "It's like a health club for the brain." Also, universities like MIT have made all of their courses and lectures available online for free! Libraries offer learning programs too. With so much available, there is no excuse not to learn! Learning is a habit. Don't leave it behind after you leave school. On the website lifehack.org, author Scott Young mentions several things to help you. Always have a book. It doesn't matter if you read fast or slow. Just read. If you read just one book a week, you'll read 52 over the course of a year. Think of the knowledge you'll gain! Practice it. As you read, do something with what you've learned. Don't just enjoy the mental exercise. Use the knowledge. If you read about painting, try it! Make a "to learn" list. Compose a "to learn" list for yourself. Maybe you want to speak better English, play the piano, or cook French food. Whatever interests you, put it on your list and then make the time to do it. Teach others. Whatever you learn, teach someone else. You'll not only help others but also understand what you've learned. 21. What's the best title for this passage? A. Make learning last a lifetime. B. What you should do after leaving school. C. Several tips on learning. D. A new trend in learning. 22. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean? A. You don't need to consider what you have learnt after graduation. B. Leaving learning behind is what you should do after a break. C. You can relax as you have escaped from the hard life of studying. D. You should have a good rest and then go on learning. 23. How many ways of learning for adults in the US are mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 24. Which of the following is NOT a suggestion made by Scott Young in the passage? A. Keep learning as a habit. B. Always have a book. C. List what you want to learn. D. Teach others what you learn. B The 92-year-old, thin, calm and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, even though she is nearly blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the hall of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she walked slowly to the elevator, I provided a true description of her tiny room, including the old sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she said with the happiness of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. “Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room…just wait.” “That doesn’t matter,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged. It’s how I arranged my mind. I have already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.” She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account. You take what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to put in a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my memory bank.” And with a smile, she said, “All my memories are happy ones.” Mrs. Jones was always happy in the nursing home and she died at the age of 108. 27. Mrs. Jones was very happy when told about her room because she________. A. couldn’t see what her room was like B. thought the nursing home was her home C. would have to live in the nursing home D. had already made up her mind to be happy 28. Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Jones? A. Proud. B. Cheerful. C. Determined D. Honest C The State of Colorado has four of the best parks out of the 58 national parks in the United States. The parks have some of the best scenery of all the national parks. Black Canyon (峡谷) of Gunnison National Park This park offers the most breathtaking views from up in the mountains into the canyons below. While exploring the canyons, you will find that the walls drop nearly straight down into the narrow valleys of the snake-like rivers below.Visitors are offered more than 100 camping sites, and a lot of bird species and many animals are native to the area. Rocky Mountain National Park It is the only national park in the north central region in the state of Colorado.Elevations in this park are anywhere from 8,000 feet to 14,259 feet at the top of Longs Peak. While traveling throughout this park you will notice two very different climates because of the difference the upper peaks of the Rocky Mountains make. You can enjoy 359 miles of hiking trails, a lot of places for camping, horse-back riding and beautiful scenery. Mesa Verde National Park This is probably the most interesting national park, offering a fascinating trip back in time to 600 AD up to 1300 AD.This park was declared a protected national park in 1906 because of the cliff dwellings (住所) that were found throughout the area, which were once-home to American Indians. Many of these dwellings can be walked through, while you imagine what each room may have been used for so many years ago. Great Sand Dunes (沙丘) National Park The Great Sand dunes National Park lies in south central Colorado, about 127 miles from Pueblo. This park has the tallest sand dunes in all of North America and has trails for hiking. The natural sandy beaches around the small rivers and lakes are good for swimmers. D “Just take a deep breath.” “Don’t think about it.” “You’re more likely to die in a car wreck on the way to the airport than you are in a plane crash.” These are just some words given to people with a fear of flying. But as Tom Cruise, playing Lt.Daniel Kaffee in the movie A Few Good Men,said,“I get sick when I fly because I’m afraid of crashing into a large mountain. I don’t think Daniel will help.” But there’s a new application that just may. Today, the VALK Foundation,a Dutch group that’s a partnership between KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Leiden University, launches the app in the US. The VALK Foundation was one of the first centers for fear-of-flying research and treatment in the world and is the organizer of three world conferences on fear of flying. The foundation said the app, called Flight App VALK,is the first scientifically-developed,web-based treatment for people who suffer from mild to moderate fear of flying. “The fear-of-flying application we have created aims to transfer all of the knowledge we have developed through our program into a mobile application that will help ease travelers’ fears,” said Dr.Lucas Van Gerwen, director of the VALK Foundation.Dr.Van Gerwen is also a psychologist and professional pilot with more than 30 years experience. The foundation said up to 30% of adults are fearful fliers. Flight App VALK is designed to help relax passengers before and during flights by educating users about flight safety and turbulence. It explains the sounds and sensations they can expect during departure, flight and landing. And,if a passenger’s flight stress reaches a panic level, they press a special panic button which provides audio and written information to help decrease flight stress levels. Most importantly,Flight App VALK can be used during the flight in the airplane mode. Once downloaded, the program does not require the Internet connection in the air. 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两处为多余选项。 Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(温度计)for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear. 36 . We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer. Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale. Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide. 37 . The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水银)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts. That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube. 38 . First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole. 39 . Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily. 40 . As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week. A.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.
