The employer has a very strict dress code—dark blue shirts and pants. On the first day, an older gentleman in his class did not have the proper clothes and he was strictly told that he would be fired if he didn’t have the right clothes the next day. He explained, “Sir, I had not been told about this. Because of my larger size, it’s sometimes difficult to find the right clothing for a price I can afford.” Last night, Robert and I decided that this old man shouldn’t lose the chance of work simply because he couldn’t afford the clothes. I had some cash on hand and Robert took it with him this morning just in case it was needed. When training started this morning, the trainer was ready to fire at the older gentleman. “You have 10 minutes to be in proper clothes,” he was told. At this point, Robert spoke up and asked if he could have 10 minutes to get him the clothes. He then ran out to the store and bought the proper-sized pants and a shirt; he returned with both and gave them to the older man. The older gentleman began to cry and told him that he couldn’t accept such a gift from a stranger. Robert told him he had to because he had lost the receipt(收据) and couldn’t return them—a little white lie. The pants were a perfect fit, the shirt was a bit tight but he was able to keep his job. “My wife and I tried to gather together some money last night, but we didn’t have enough to buy the clothes,” he told Robert. “It’s unbelievable to me that somebody would do such a thing for only knowing me a day!” More unbelievable is how good it has made Robert and me feel to do this. 21. If the older man did not have the proper clothes, he would _____ A. be punished B. be offered another job C. put off the training class D. lose his job 22. The money which was paid for the clothes belonged to _____ A. the trainer B. the older man C. the writer D. Robert 23. How did Robert persuade the older man to accept the clothes? A. He told the older man that he would lose his job if he did not take them. B. He told a lie that the clothes didn’t fit himself. C. He told the older man that he could save money and return it later. D. He told the older man that he had no way to send them back. 24. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Proper clothes for a stranger B. Fight against strict rules C. A strange employer D. An unbelievable thing B Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing. By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic(逻辑)behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.” Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea how right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I’ll learn chess,” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you’ll have a better understanding of your brain from now. Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success. Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there. Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try. 25. What would be the best title for the text? A. A Way on How to Write. B. Increase Your Brain Power through Writing. C. Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing. D. How to Start Your Writing. 26. If a writer writes something, it means that he or she . A. has understood it very well B. needs to understand it better C. wants to remember it in his or her mind D. is exercising his or her “explain power” 27. The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fifth paragraph implies that . A. you are already successful B. you still need to work hard C. writing can help you walk half way D. writing is important to solve problems 28. What’s the main purpose of the writer writing the text? A. To advise readers to start their writing. B. To explain the importance of writing. C. To persuade readers to become writers. D. To increase readers’ brain power. C When first entered, Vanak Restaurant does not look like much of a restaurant, but once the pleasant smells of kabob(烤肉串)hit the senses, you are unable to call it anything less. Owned by a local couple, this Persian restaurant has an inviting, homelike atmosphere that many restaurants lack. The space is small with only a few dining tables and nearly no decoration, but the environment is truly charming. Lying in a hardly noticeable street corner, the restaurant still attracts all customers, especially those experienced in the delights of Middle Eastern cooking. A common sight is that of old Persian men sitting in the corner talking loudly about world topics, watching news events on TV, drinking a black tea known as Persian chai, and reading local Persian newspapers all the while trying to finish off their plates piled with food. The variety of food at the restaurant is limited, but the amount of each dish is fairly large. Most of the meals can serve two people and are under $10, so not only is it affordable but practical as well. The food, especially appeals to health-conscious eaters because each dish is very healthy, made with limited fat and oil and served straight off the grill (烤架) . The main dish that the restaurant is popular for is its kabobs, which are a different style of grilled meat. One delicious and extremely healthy dish is the Joojeh Kabob, which is made of grilled chicken pieces served with either rice or bread. Another great kabob is the Cbelo Kabob, kabob consisting of grilled beef. Although the restaurant is small, the atmosphere and the food is delicious. It is a place that should not be overlooked. 29. When first entering the restaurant, one can find that it ________. A. is splendidly decorated B. has pleasant smells of kabobs C. is | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
