It was a dark day, one of depression, sorrow and anger. As I climbed out of the 21 , after witnessing my time in the 100 yard freestyle, I did not feel like speaking to anyone. I was lying on my cool bed when an idea 24 my head. Success is the 25 to go from failure to failure without 26 your enthusiasm. At practice the next day, I told my swimming teammates about my goal time and they all either laughed or replied with a 27 similar response like, “You can’t do it” or “Probably not”. Believe it or not, these are the responses that made my goal 28 .

Finally came the day when I had to 29 to myself and others that with 30 there is no limit to your achievements.

If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因)engineering. In the future, I think there will more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operate and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传递)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read.—sports and international news, etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspaper, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screens or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

A.The Best Way to Get News B.The Changes of Media

42.In the writer’s opinion, in the future, ______.

A.more big political affairs, wars and disasters will make news

B.mewspaper will not be printed in publishing houses any longer

C.newspapers will cover more scientific research

D.more and more people will watch TV

43.From the passage, we can infer ______.

A.newspapers will win the competition among the different media

B.newspapers will stay with us together, with other media

C.television will take the place of newspapers

D.the write believe some media will die out

44.The phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means ______.

A.compete with B.depend on C.fight with D.kill off

Charlie, a master carpenter, was very well respected in his community. Everyone knew that if he wanted the best, he should call on him. Of course that meant that Charlie would never be rich. His fellow carpenters always told him that if you used inferior(较差的)materials and cheap labour than you could make a lot of money. Charlie would not hear of it.

One day, John, the richest man in town came to Charlie. He said that he had just bought the piece of land in town. It overlooked the entire city. He was going to Europe for 4 months and wanted Charlie to build him the best house in town. “Spare no expense and give me the best.”

Charlie thought about this and decided finally he would make some money. He did not get his usual great carpenters and fine materials from his normal supplies. He built the house and covered up the flews(瑕疵). After 4 months he spent about 50% of what he usually spent on a house.

John came back from Europe and immediately called Charlie and asked him to meet him at the house. When they met, John asked him if he had used the finest materials and spared no expense. Charlie, then told him that he knew he was not rich and had always struggled. So he wanted to reward Charlie for all of his years of service to the community by giving Charlie th
